Activity Holidays 101 : What To Expect

What to expect on an activity holiday is the topic for this part of our activity holidays guide.

Activity holidays are a popular type of holiday in which you spend a length of time (from a few days to a few weeks or months), either in your home country or abroad, participating in one, or a range, of activities. You might take part in activities on a “normal” vacation, but activity holidays are different because the activity (or activities) is the main focus of your vacation, not just an add-on

They generally are more costly than say a ‘normal’ holiday, but not always. You can save several hundreds of dollars by planning and organizing your own trip but not knowing the local language or if you have a tight schedule in which you need to stick to, this can become very difficult. Also, using a good activity holiday company for your bookings ensures your safety is taken care of, even though these trips are more risky, since their reputation relies on it.

Such holidays are generally offered as an all-inclusive package so the price listed on websites or in brochures will include your accommodation and food, as well as the instruction you’ll receive from your instructors / guides. Whether insurance and transportation are included will vary, so be sure to get everything included or not in writing as your confirmation.

The vast majority of trips are adult group holidays but trips that cater for family and children are also available. Group size will tend to stay small in size, averaging 10-15 participants in each, however this can vary one way or the other depending on the activity taken place. Smaller groups allow for more attention from the guide as well as less time just standing around thus making for a much better experience.

It is first best to choose which type of activity or activities that you would like to take part in and then concentrate on picking a destination. Reason being is that you will most likely spend most of your time participating in the activities rather that exploring the destination you have choose.
