Beloved Sport of The American People: Baseball

Often simply referred to as ‘America’s pastime’ baseball trivia will show that there are few sports as beloved by the American people. The game is played with nine players active to a team, with one team playing the field and one team batting.  The history of the game is a long one. Ball and bat games have been around in Europe in various forms for hundreds of years, and it appears that a game very similar to baseball was being played by the mid seventeen hundreds.

A Baseball quiz will show that most historians of the sport consider the first game in the current form to have been played in 1846. The game was played between the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nine, and it was only a decade after this that the game began to experience extreme popularity.

Baseball trivia shows that the sport has evolved to become one of the most popular minor league and professional sports in the country. The governing body of the professional league is known simply as the MLB or Major League Baseball. Major League Baseball became an extremely popular sport for the American public to listen to on the radio, and Babe Ruth is largely credited as being the reason that it became so popular in its earlier years.

A baseball quiz will show that it has been plagued by controversy in recent years. Although all professional sports have been faced with trials regarding performance enhancing drugs, in no other sport has this been as widespread as in baseball. The other reason that this has been such an issue is because of the attention that steroid use in baseball has gained in the media, with it being a major story for several years. The drug use scandal also called into question for many the records which had been set by those who later proved to have been using.

Major League Baseball is currently comprised of thirty teams all together. Like all professional sports, the teams have moved from city to city and have come and gone over the years. Like the NHL, and unlike the NFL, MLB includes teams in both Canada and the United States. In Canada, there is only one team, the Toronto Blue Jays, although Montreal used to have a team for several years. Two of the teams still in existence can trace their lineage back even further than the formation of MLB to an earlier league, and they are the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves.
