William Henry Getty France Sr. was born in Washinton, D.C. in 1909. He loved the automobile from his childhood, even skipping out on school to drive the family car on a board track. Eventually he went on to own his a service station, building up his customer base by hand cranking customer’s cars before dawn and in the middle of winter. By 1935 The Great Depression was in full swing and Daytona Beach was world famous for land speed records.

Bill France knew his family could not survive in Washington much longer, he also knew there was a large annual community of car enthusiasts in Daytona. In 1935 Bill France moved his family to Daytona Beach with just $100 in his pocket.
