Hockey Safety Advice You Need to Be Aware of for Next Season
Author: Mitch Sanders
Everyone knows one thing about hockey: it’s a dangerous sport at every level of play. There are plenty of opportunities for injury when it comes to hockey. One particular aspect of hockey is “checking” which is something that can easily lead to injury. The move involves one player crashing into another for the purpose of stopping forward motion and is legal at most age levels and in most leagues. A lot of things can happen when this particular play occurs. Crashing into the boards is a common result and plenty of fights have broken out over checks. Keep reading to study different safety tips that can make hockey a safer bet.
Most people have discovered that safety precautions are pretty specific to hockey. As an example, there are pads for elbows, shoulders, and shins in the sport of hockey. You should only wear gear that is designed for the game of hockey while playing hockey and not substitute pads designed for other sports. You will quickly find that safety equipment and gear worn for other sports are not adequate to protect you for hockey. Let’s look at pads meant for the lower leg. Knees and shins are shielded from shock with padding and additional damage by a hard plastic covering that extends from the knee down to the boot of the skate.
We are pretty sure that you are attached to your teeth and would prefer they stay in your mouth. For this reason, a mouth-guard is a critical piece of safety equipment you need to wear. Although, this piece of equipment won’t be shielding just your teeth from damage. We know that your gums, lips and tongue are also important to you. If a puck comes flying at you and hits you in the mouth or you get a stick in the face, you will sustain some injuries. However, with a mouth-guard you will be able to protect some of your teeth from flying out. You will probably have to have some dental work done to repair the area where your teeth were knocked out.
All levels below professional hockey require face masks as a safety precaution. The type of helmets worn include a face mask that is permanently attached to the helmet. Helmets with face masks are important for all levels of play, even pickup matches played on open ice. The main reason being that this protects your face from pucks and sticks that would otherwise cause serious damage. One common complaint could be that the face mask helps obscure vision and complete overall view. However, they are required in the junior leagues and certainly leagues for younger kids.
Safety is a serious issue in all sports and for players of all skills and abilities. However, the younger players are very much at risk with playing hockey with insufficient safety equipment. One thing that is important is for parents to be involved if their child plays youth league hockey. It is important for everyone to learn about all that is available as well as the potential dangers involved with the sport.

Best Hockey Player of all Time – Hockey and Gretzky Complimented Each Other
Author: Gregory Brooks
Among the most popular games in the world, you will find that ice hockey holds an enviable place. Even if ice hockey has not attracted such huge crowds yet, you must have realized that it is fast gaining in importance. The game of hockey immediately reminds you of the name Wayne Gretzky for he is the player who brought fame to hockey.
Wayne got into hockey when he was just a child. Being Canadian, it was natural that he grew up viewing Hockey Night on Canadian television. He started to practice hockey in the ice rink behind his house. Even when he was just a toddler, he could instill that confidence in his father Walter’s mind, that his son was destined to become a great hockey player. Eight years was the minimum age for participation in organized hockey. Wayne started to play at the age of 6, and was scoring prolifically by the time he was 10.
To list some of his achievements from a long list, we could say that as a lead player, as many as nine times he was proclaimed “the most important player” of the league. He captained and literally led the charge of the Edmonton Oilers to grab the Stanley Cup four times inside of just five years. Five times he held the title of “the Most Sportsmanlike Players,” and his legend lives on.
If you were to exam his career, you will find that he took international ice hockey to new heights by creating a score of 2,857 career points. He is still the highest scoring player because his score has never been superseded.
Wayne dominated the hockey field for almost two decades. He took hockey to new levels. A group of NHL players, broadcasters and coaches ranked him as the best.
In the final season of his playing career, he could build his grand total to 894 goals, and 1963 assists for 2857 points. All this, he achieved in 1,487 career games, making it the cherry on top of his career.
The whole world considers him as a true sports icon and has appeared on the covers of many respectable magazines. He has addressed the world on different causes. On his retirement, he was invited to join the stars in Hollywood, an offer that he did not accept. He now runs a restaurant in Toronto, which is near the Hockey Hall of fame. He has along with run started his own brand in clothing. Apart from all this, he hosts a very commercially successful yearly camp in Toronto called the Hockey Fantasy camp. He is the managing partner of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey, and he is also the director of the Team Canada for the Winter Olympics.
He is an athlete of great renown. He holds a place in history that could equal legends like Pele and Muhammad Ali, as one of the best athletes of the 20th century. He still dedicates his life to the bright future of hockey. He watched hockey as a child, played hockey, grew along with hockey, and now he is doing his best for the uplift of the game and its reputation as a whole. He has always belonged to hockey, and you could safely say that hockey belongs to Wayne Gretzky and undoubtedly, he is the greatest of his kind.

Great Ideas For Collecting Hockey Cards
Author: Margaret Burgess
Collecting cards is a major part of most every popular professional team sport, and hockey has its own share of trading cards. Collecting hockey cards is a fun and exciting hobby for hockey fans. Different collectors have different objectives when card collecting – those who want to learn about hockey’s rich history collect vintage or historical cards, while others simply collect hockey cards of current teams and players. And who knows, that Sidney Crosby limited-edition rookie card of yours may appreciate in value in about five to ten years!
If your goal is indeed to make your collection of hockey cards increase in value, you may also want to sell them once that appreciation in value occurs, and in order to do this, your cards must be kept in ship-shape – this is of premium importance. Those who are after convenience can always opt to store their cards in boxes, but it is much safer to use binders with special sheets for card protection – this not only protects your cards, but also allows for easy viewing. If you choose to box your cards rather than using a binder, be sure to use individual card protectors for each card. Some of the boxes you can find in sporting goods stores are made especially for card collectors, as they allow cards to fit in snugly, thus minimizing the chances of damage.
Card collecting has always been pretty popular, but with the introduction of new trading card collectibles, in addition to the traditional sports cards, the hobby of collecting trading cards seems to have become more widespread. Now, you can get card collecting supplies, like binders, card collecting boxes and card protectors, at just about any variety store, discount store, office supply store, or sports shop. Most music or video game stores have card collecting supplies as well. You want your hockey card collection to be in immaculate condition even if your cards are already a few years old, so you have to invest wisely on your supplies so that you can be sure your cards remain in perfect condition when the time comes for you to trade or sell them.
It is also very important to ensure that your cards do not get hit by direct sunlight or placed in extremely hot areas. Heat may damage the cards, especially if they are in plastic card protectors, and sunlight will definitely fade the cards. Moisture is one element you want to exile to the penalty box – for good! This can occur if you keep your cards in wet or humid areas.
For those collecting hockey cards, here’s one final tip as an aside – your collection of hockey cards would be more valuable if it is a complete set. However, selling individual cards, especially if they are rare, can also prove to be profitable.

Eliminate Odd Man Rushes
Author: Hamish Ortizco
When attackers outnumber defenders on a rush it’s called an odd man rush. It happens when there is a possession turnover and the play changes direction. If you’re always outnumbered on the other team’s breakout you have a more basic problem, but that’s another article.
Imagine your team is attacking, and all three forwards cross the opposing team’s blue line. They have 2 D-men back, and one of their forwards, but the other two are lagging on the back check. Your puck carrier loses the puck somehow – his pass is intercepted, he takes a shot that goes wide, or he gets checked. What happens now?
First, your team is facing away from the direction that the puck is now travelling, and their team is facing toward the direction its going – your end! They have to skate forward while some of your forwards have to turn around and try to catch up.
If all three of your forwards are deep they are essentially going to be out of the play. The opposition forwards who were floating back will pick up any puck chipped or passed ahead by their D-men and your two D-men will be outnumbered. The more often this happens the more often the opposition gets a scoring chance, and the more often that happens the more often they’ll score. Goals are hard to come by. You can’t give them away or dig yourself a hole. If you keep other teams under 3 goals per game, and in a perfect world, under 2 goals a game, you’ll increase the number of your wins.
The solution is simple. There are going to be puck possession changes in the other end. We all know this. They aren’t a surprise. Even if they only come off shots and rebounds they are going to happen. Therefore, prepare for them. Anticipate them.
Start by not getting three men deep. Keep one forward high and ready to reverse direction. In fact, at some times you’ll want two forwards high and only one deep. High means close to the blue line. Deep means close to the goal. The high forward stays between the blue line and the top of the face off circle and watches for turnovers, or for the other team to cough the puck up. If the turnover occurs he’s there to cover the third man breaking out. That means they don’t have a man advantage – no odd man, no good scoring chance.
Simple. Logical. No magic.
How can you adopt this simple tactic? It has to be a team culture thing. One guy can’t tell everyone else what to do. Nobody likes hearing one guy shoot his mouth off in the role of self-proclaimed expert.
You can try picking on individuals, but the best way is to talk about it and throw the responsibility out to the lines. Let the three guys who play together decide who’s going to do what, and when. Nobody will argue that odd man rushes are great. Let them decide how to forecheck and attack, but talk about how the D need help and can’t be left hanging. Get a few guys on the team to yell out from the bench about keeping one man high. Four guys sending the message out means that one guy isn’t being a boring evangelist.
Enlist the defence corps to help you. They can tell a forward to stay high and cover a guy. Asking for help is better than telling someone what to do. Forwards won’t argue with a defenceman who asks for help. A good relationship between D and forwards means more passes to forwards, and they want the puck. And, if you get this tactic figured out at a basic level, all three forwards benefit – the two who do go deep cause turnovers that the high guy picks up and feeds back to them. Break outs by the opposing team break down, and you stay in their end longer. The two who go deep see how this works and they re-enforce the system.
When the other team gets the puck guy on your team who is closest to the puck attacks the puck carrier immediately, and tenaciously. The idea is to force the puck carrier to pass quickly. Quick accurate passes demand skill, and most beer league players don’t have tons of that. If you make the puck carrier move the puck fast there’s a better chance that he’ll miss his target, which will lead to a turnover in favor of your team.
The second forward deep has to take away the first obvious break out pass. The more obvious he makes it that he’s going to cover that outlet the more chance that the puck carrier will look for a different pass to make. That will usually be up the middle. Up the middle is usually not good for a defenceman who is under pressure.
Remember your high forward? He’s hanging out near the blueline, and if the puck gets coughed up he has a chance to grab it. If the opposing D-man rushes the pass around the net your second forward will cover. If it goes up the middle your high guy can grab it, or put enough pressure on the intended pass recipient that the pass goes astray. At the worst, if you pressure them enough, they just fire the puck up the boards, resulting in icing or another turnover in your favour.
If they can’t pass and break out quickly, with your three guys deep, there’s no odd man rush. Thats fewer goals against. So, keep one forward high and ready.
If you want to win lots of beer league games you need to read the writings of Hamish Ortizco. He has played a ton of low calibre hockey and knows the difference between what it takes to win hockey games at the lowest levels. Check out his other writings for more free information and hockey drills.
Everyone knows one thing about hockey: it’s a dangerous sport at every level of play. There are many opportunities to get hurt from a variety of means. Checking, an important component of game play in hockey, is one such opportunity for injury. Checking is allowed in most age groups and allows one player to crash into another player in order to impede forward progress. This play opens the doors for many possible outcomes. Checking has led to its fair share of fights as well as board crashes. Keep these safety tips in mind when you or a loved one engages in the great game of hockey.
Use common sense and good judgment when selecting hockey skates. Take the time to make sure the skates are a good fit. Don’t wear skates that are too small as they may injure the foot. Foot pain is a major distraction from what’s taking place in the game. Losing focus on the game makes you a likely candidate for injury. Skates also need to provide adequate support. Skates that do not provide additional protection, in the form of a protective cup, for the toes should not be purchased for hockey. Proper care of your skates matters, as well. To properly work the blades of your skate need to be sharp.
It is critical that all your hockey safety equipment is the proper fit. Whether you believe it or not, you can prevent some serious injuries from occurring if your helmet and other vital safety gear fits properly. If your equipment doesn’t fit properly, then it will be compromised and unable to do its job properly. You will basically be compromising your own safety and putting yourself in danger. The helmet, for example, should never be too loose when you wear it. Since it happens quite often in hockey, you are likely to seriously hurt yourself if you fall over and bang your head. You don’t want your various pads moving around while you are playing, which is why you need to ensure that they are a good fit.
One example is that your helmet should be fastened will and fit snugly. If you take a fall, which is highly likely in hockey, then you can still get hurt if you hit your head. You also want to make sure all your pads fit well so they won’t have a tendency to move during game play.
All ages in all leagues below professional level hockey are required to wear face masks. These are helmets with permanently attached face masks. Helmets with face masks are important for all levels of play, even pickup matches played on open ice. The main reason being that this protects your face from pucks and sticks that would otherwise cause serious damage. A few players continue to complain that the face masks actually interfere with their ability to see well enough to play hockey. However, they are required in the junior leagues and certainly leagues for younger kids. The most critical aspect to hockey is to ensure that you play safely. This doesn’t mean you have to be too soft when playing, it simply means that you need to know your hockey safety tips well and wear the best of the best when it comes to safety equipment.

Hockey Safety Tips Like These are Important to Know
Author: Melissa Hall
The nature of ice hockey is one that doesn’t allow the possibility of preventing all potential injuries. On-ice dangers for the average hockey player include things like the stray hockey puck moving at the speed of light, hockey sticks going a tad out of control, and the blades from hockey skates. If you get hit “just right” by a flying puck, you are sure to at least come away with a good bruise. Of course, this is a best case situation. Of course, there are other considerations like pulls and sprains to consider. Yes, hockey is fraught with hidden dangers that are always present. It’s really important for players to be mentally aware and watch out for danger. We have some important hockey safety tips you should know about that may prevent a nasty injury down the road.

The other equipment is not designed to deal with the punishment of a hockey game. Take a look at the pads designed to protect the lower leg.
Obviously, you are quite happy with your teeth and would like to see them stay where they are. That is why a mouth-guard is a really good piece of safety gear you want to wear. But it won’t be providing protection solely for your teeth. There is your tongue, gums and lips that are also important to you, we know.
If a puck comes flying at you and hits you in the mouth or you get a stick in the face, you will sustain some injuries. However, with a mouth-guard you will be able to protect some of your teeth from flying out. This type of injury will inevitably lead to the need for some dental work to repair the damage.
Proper hockey gloves are also necessary to play hockey. Your hands are important tools in the game of hockey and you don’t want to risk injuring them. Your hands are filled with many tiny bones. These bones often require a lengthy healing period. A good fit is important for hockey gloves. Gloves that fit loosely are a constant battle to keep on. this makes it difficult to properly handle the stick. You will be distracted by loose-fitting gloves as well. When it comes to hockey safety, you need to get all the facts. Knowing the facts can prevent serious injuries.

3 Hockey Safety Tips You Need To Know
Author: Tim Minnifield
The nature of ice hockey is one that doesn’t allow the possibility of preventing all potential injuries. Dangers like flying hockey sticks, sharp skate blades, and hockey pucks moving at the speed of the most recent slap shot are all dangers to content with. A good hit by a hockey puck will leave you bruised at minimum. Bruising is the least worrisome of outcomes that could happen here. Then there are considerations involving getting hurt from muscle pulls and various sprains, etc. It’s true, hockey is a dangerous sport. Players must be on their toes and aware of what’s going on constantly. When you pay attention to these safety tips, hockey will be safer for everyone on the ice.
Much about hockey safety is highly specific to this sport. Hockey requires skaters to wear pads on shoulders, shins, and elbows. It’s important to understand that hockey safety gear is designed specifically for hockey and you should not wear gear designed for other sports in its place. The gear designed for other sports is simply not up to the task of protecting hockey players. Let’s look at pads meant for the lower leg. Leg guards in hockey include pads for the knee and shin and a hard cover that protects the leg all the way down to the skate.
You should seriously consider replacing any equipment that has been damaged in a previous game. Perhaps the only piece of protective equipment that hockey shares with other sports is the cup that is used to protect the groin area. While it isn’t unique to hockey, it’s understandable why this happens to be one important piece of equipment. You can use them with the insert found in most undershorts meant to be worn for hockey.
Some players opt to use an athletic support in lieu of the undershorts to hold their cups. Do not ever practice or play hockey without using a protective cup in order to avoid the particularly painful injury that could happen without it. We have some difficulty imagining the pain associated with getting hit by a speeding hockey puck in that area. Seriously, are you interested in that particular experience? Don’t take that risk!
The protective visor is one piece of hockey safety equipment that isn’t always used. However, you will find that there are plenty of pro hockey players who take the smart approach and use them. The protective visor is made of hard plastic which is meant to provide protection for your face and eyes. It is very easy to get hit by the puck or a flying hockey stick blade which can obviously cause serious damage and injury. No piece of safety gear is 100% injury proof. However, it can seriously reduce the chances of injury when it is properly worn. It is vital that you are aware of hockey safety tips as they can prevent sever injuries from taking place. Nothing can replace preparation, quality safety gear and good judgment.
