Overview Of Shopping For Hockey Equipment
Author: Adriana Noton
For sporting enthusiasts, there might come a time when they need to begin to think about shopping for hockey equipment. Those that really love the game will be itching to get started, but should have a basic idea of which vendors will be able to provide which supplies. They can then begin the process of obtaining what they need to play.
Most towns and urban areas (and even rural areas) have all kinds of stores located in plazas or shopping malls. There will likely be a good number of sporting goods stores thrown in for good measure. These stores should be filled with all kinds of equipment, and might even offer bargain days and coupons, which smart shoppers should take advantage of if at all possible.
Sticks are the focal point of any hockey player, because they are the object close to the heart and the piece of equipment with which he/she can score goals and demonstrate his/her talent. Very good sticks will be expensive, and some people will not mind. People can choose between wood sticks or plastic sticks, depending on their talent and if they are playing formally or not.
Balls are the staple of any neighborhood game. Kids buy them for cheap and then play with them in driveways or on abandoned streets. Pucks can be used as well, but these are less popular and are usually reserved for people who play on teams and on ice. Most anything that rolls will do for an informal pick-up game.
Protection is obviously needed, especially for more advanced games where the shots come harder and faster. Shin guards protect the legs from being scuffed up, while cups protect the crotch area. For a goalie, facial gear is a must, as without them it is possible to get seriously hurt and even have the eyes injured. Goalie masks can sometimes be specialized to include rather intricately designed logos.
Uniforms are important for kids who play in leagues, as everyone on a team will have to look the same. If a league requires this, coaches on a team will have to stick their heads together and come up with a design that can be purchased. Sometimes, the players will be asked to help fund the uniforms. This is rather standard.
For parents who have youngsters who are just beginning to take up the game of hockey formally, they will probably have to splurge for some equipment. They should be the ones overseeing the process, however, as beginners often do not need expensive supplies. They just need stuff that works and can be banged around a little bit. Parents should realize this and keep an eye on the purchases so that the price does not become too steep.
In thinking about shopping for hockey equipment people should come out of the gates with a plan and a check list so that they don’t forget everything. This is the way to go about it, and people will in this manner obtain whatever they need.

Generally consisting of skates, hockey pants, gloves, shin pads, sticks, and helmets are players’ hockey equipment. The most vital, apart from your body protection, would have to be the hockey stick.
Choosing hockey sticks that suit you best is important. Choosing the wrong sticks could only result to you playing up badly or even doing yourself an injury. So what exactly should you do when you are choosing the right hockey sticks? Here are some helpful tips.
When standing in your skates, keep in mind that your stick should reach your chin. Some defence based players prefer a longer stick to give them more reach when they’re defending. If it’s possible, you can buy your sticks a little long and the shop could cut them down for you. This is a lot better than choosing a stick that is too short or too long. A lot of people would find out that their stick would have to be customized in order to give them optimum comfort.
You can work out what length you need by looking closely at the wear of the tape on the bottom of your stick. You should probably consider a longer stick if you notice the tape is worn down near the toe. On the other hand, you should probably consider a shorter stick if the tape is worn near the heel. Trying out sticks at different lengths is what you should do until you are able to find one that’s got a comfortable weight and feel for you.
When choosing hockey sticks you should also consider weight and blade size. Most players recommend wrapping both the stick handle and the blade with a layer of tape. By doing this, you will be able to have a tighter grip on the handle so that the puck does not slide off the blade as easy as normal. If you are new to the game and have yet to tape your stick then we recommend that you do this early on. As outlined above, it will help you measure your game.
The way you stick handle and shoot the puck will also be affected by different curves. Again, when you’re starting off and new to the game, it is a good idea to try different curves until you find one that feels comfortable. Trying a few different hockey sticks is considered as the best idea so that you will be able to find one that conforms to your style.

History of the NHL Awards – Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
Author: Bruce Munro
As improbable as it may seem in a sport that is recognized as one of the most physically punishing, the National Hockey League annually awards one player from the league for their sportsmanship – it is given as recognition of a player’s gentlemanly conduct and sportsmanship whilst exhibiting and maintaining a high level of playing ability. The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is an absolute necessity for a league with a visible, and some might say increasing, level of violence associated with it. It is important in that it sends a clear message to both fans and players alike – that skill, good sportsmanship and professional conduct are vital and important to the sport, and that these qualities are worthy of recognition.
As with other NHL awards, the voting is conducted at the end of the regular season by the Hockey Writers Association. Each voter judges their top five candidates on a points system, the top three finalists are named and the award is given at the end of season at an annual awards ceremony after the Stanley Cup playoffs have been completed.
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy has an interesting background that is, in a roundabout way, associated with Canadian politics.
According to Wikipedia, “Field Marshal Julian Hedworth George Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy was a British Army officer who served as Governor General of Canada, the 12th since Canadian Confederation. The Governor General traveled the length and breadth of the country, meeting with Canadians wherever he went. He also immersed himself in Canada’s culture and came to particularly love hockey, rarely missing a game played by the Ottawa Senators”.
The trophy is so named because of the Viscounts wife, Marie Evelyn Moreton, known as Lady Byng. She, along with her husband, was an avid hockey fan, and donated the trophy to the NHL in the year 1925. She also had the distinct honor of naming the very first recipient of the award – Frank Nighbor, who, unsurprisingly, was a member of the Lady Byng’s favorite hockey team, the Ottawa Senators. As the season was winding down, Lady Byng invited Frank Nighbor to Rideau hall to show him the trophy and get his opinion on whether or not it would be worthy for donation and if the NHL would actually accept it as a trophy for the most sportsmanlike and gentlemanly player in the league. Nighbor took one look at the trophy and told Lady Byng that he thought it would be accepted by the league. She then surprised Nighbor by awarding him the trophy on the spot, thus making him the very first recipient of the award.
The award has had multiple winners throughout its history. The year after Nighbor won, the award was won by Frank Boucher of the New York Rangers seven out of the next eight seasons. Lady Byng was so impressed with Boucher that she gave him the actual original award and donated a second version of it to the league as a replacement in 1935.
Other multiple winners are as follows; Wayne Gretzky with five wins, Pavel Datsyuk and Red Kelly with four wins each and Bobby Bauer, Alex Delvecchio, Mike Bossy and Ron Francis with three wins each. Due to Boucher’s prolific win streak with the award, the New York Rangers to this day hold the most wins of the trophy by a team with a total of fifteen. Winning the lady Byng and the Hart Memorial Trophy in the same year is a feat few have managed; this feat has only been attained five times in league history – Bobby Hull, Buddy O’Connor, Stan Mikita, Wayne Gretzky and Joe Sakic. Stan Mikita stands out even further as he is the only player in hockey history to win the Lady Byng, Hart Memorial and Art Ross trophies all in the same season, and he did it twice! (*1966-67, 1967-68)
Of all the recipients, only two were defenceman; Red Kelly and Bill Quakenbush, and that was fifty years ago. To date, no goalie has ever won the trophy.
The name was changed from the Lady Byng to the Lady Byng memorial Trophy by the league when Lady Byng passed away in 1949. Thirteen years later, in 1962, the original trophy that was given to Frank Boucher was destroyed when a fire engulfed Boucher’s home.
The current holder of the award is Martin St. Louis of the Tampa bay Lightning. Finalists for the award this year are Loui Eriksson of Dallas, Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit and Martin St. Louis of Tampa bay.

History of the NHL Awards – The Frank J. Selke Award
Author: Bruce Munro
The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded at the end of every season to the NHL player who performs and exhibits the highest level of skill in the defensive aspects of the game. It is named after Frank J. Selke, who was at one time a general manger for the Toronto maple Leafs as well as the Montreal Candiens. Generally, it is seen as recognition as to which player is the best in the league, in any given year, when it comes to “two way” performance. Two way performance can be defined loosely as being just as good with the puck as without it, being defensively capable and still capable of scoring. Abilities that would be an asset to winning the Selke Award would be strong face off ability, forechecking and penalty killing ability, as well as being able to contribute to offense. Perseverance is perhaps the biggest asset to two way playing ability, as it is an attribute that is usually the domain of players who are willing to go to the “tough areas” (example: the corner boards) to retrieve the puck. Being able to take the puck away from the opposition generally leads to scoring chances, as such, many two way players are also very adept playmakers when on the offensive.
The Selke Award was first implemented in the 1977 -1978 season and since that time it has been awarded 32 times to a total of 20 different players. The very first winner was Bob Gainey of the Montreal Canadiens, his performance that season not only ensured his winning the award, in many ways his performance that season became the standard against which all future Selke winners would be compared. Fittingly, Gainey went on to win the Selke the following three season to win it a total of four times in a row, a record that still stands today. The aforementioned Pavel Datsyuk, as well as Jere Lehtinen, Guy Carbonneau have all won the award three times. The Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings have each won the award a total of seven times apiece. The Detroit Redwings especially have been quite active as current (Pavel Datsyuk) or former players (Sergei Federov, Kris Draper, and Steve Yzerman) have combined to win the award seven times since 1994. Last season’s winner was Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings. It is his third consecutive time winning the award.
While it may seem as though the Selke is awarded for player defensive responsibility, it is important to note that defensive acumen is what helps to generate offense in hockey. Most of the recipients over the years have all had solid offensive numbers and statistics to complement their defensive ability. A good example would be 1992-93 winner Doug Gilmour, who posted spectacular offensive stats to go along with his defensive play that season by scoring 32 times, and tallying 95 assists for a total of 127 points. Another trend amongst Selke winners is almost all of them have been above average in their face off ability. Wining the majority of your face offs in a game definitely helps your team with puck possession, and the more you have the puck than your opposition the more likely it is that your team will generate more scoring chances, thus increasing their chances of winning the game. This is another reason why Selke winners are also such good penalty killers; winning the majority of your face offs, especially when shorthanded, is a great way to stay in possession and take away the man advantage.
The Hart Trophy or the Art Ross Trophy is usually associated with offensive, dynamic players, but the Selke has many all-star names on its winners list. Indeed, many of the NHL’s most dynamic players have won the Selke Trophy over the years; Bobby Clarke, Sergei Federov, Steve Yzerman to name a few.
Finalists for this year include last year’s winner, Pavel Datsyuk, Chicago’s Jonathan Toews and Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler.
