Three of the Aintree Grand National obstacles, including the infamous Becher’s Brook, are being made safer, the British Horse racing Authority (BHA) declared. The alterations are among interim measures arising from a review group convened after this year’s race when 2 horses died.

The deaths followed four at the three-day festival in 2010 and 5 back in 2009. Since 2000, 33 horses have been destroyed at the end of season festival meeting, bringing frequent protests from animal welfare campaigners. The drop on the landing side at Becher’s will be cut by 4 or five inches (10-12.5 cm), though the height remains the same at 4ft 10 ins (1.47 metres).

Levelling work will be carried out on the landing side to reduce the drop at the first fence which horses frequently approach too quickly after the beginning. At the fourth fence, viewed as one of the most difficult together with Becher’s, the height will be cut by 2 inches to 4ft 10 ins (1.47 metres).

“The observations relate specifically to the Grand National course and its fences which may be subject to a well-balanced package of alterations with the purpose of enhancing safety for competitors,” A BHA statement declared. The changes follow expert analysis of all races run on the National course since 1990 when it was radically remodelled.

They also follow consultation with animal rights groups, trainers and jockeys and will have been made in good time for Aintree’s next race on the National course in December.

“It is not possible to totally get rid of risk in horse racing,” Director Julian Thick said. “However, I am sure the course changes we are asserting today will, over time , have a positive impact.” The results of a full review will be published in October however it is known that among items being considered is a new post-race wash-down and cooling area for all horses. Ballabriggs, this year’s winner on a warm day, was too exhausted to be ridden into the winner’s enclosure and had to be continuously hosed down before recovering fully.

In the late 1930’s, famous movie star and singer Bing Crosby set out to follow his dream of building a horse track at Del Mar in the cool Pacific Ocean breezes. Bing wanted a club where he and his friends could bet the horses all day and party all night. Thus was the Del Mar Horse Track born and built.

When the race track opened the next year, Bing Crosby personally met fans at the ticket turnstyles to welcome them. The sleepy little resort village of Del Mar was about to became famous as the home of horse racing, soon to be visited by Hollywood stars, horsemen and horse racing fans from all around the globe.

A milestone in the track’s history came during the summer of 1938 when the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosted a $25,000 match-up of Seabiscuit. Only Major League Baseball superseded horse racing in American sports during this era. The upcoming match was the talk of the country. The race was the first time a thoroughbred horse race was ever broadcast nationally by NBC radio. The rest is history: Seabiscuit won and the Del Mar Race Track was famous – once and for all joining other storied race tracks in the annals of sports history as one of the most famous race tracks in the country.

Between the years of 1938 and 1942 the Del Mar horse racing track entertained Hollywood personalities and celebrities Mickey Rooney, Desi Arnaz , Lucille Ball, W. C. After the war, the Santa Fe Railroad offered a “racetrack special” to bring race fans from Los Angeles directly to Del Mar.
