Tune Up Tips For Spring – How To Make Sure Your Bike Is In Shape

If you didn’t ride in the winter, then you’ve probably spent your time watching T.V. or eating chips. Soon, a new mountain biking season will begin in spring. Your body may not be in shape, but at least these tips will ensure your bike is.
Before you take your bike out, check the wear and tear on your components and adjust them if its necessary. Begin with your chain. If it’s not been replaced in a year or more, then it’s time to do so. The individual parts of the chain will get worn out over time and increase its effective length.
As this happens, the chain is no longer able to conform to the cog and the teeth of the chain ring, so it wears those teeth out to fit the profile of the chain. To save yourself from having to replace high priced cogs and chain rings, replace the chain before it stretches too much.
Then the bearing surfaces should be checked. These include your bottom bracket, hubs, and the headset. With no play in the system, each of these should turn without a problem. Each cranking arm should be tightly snug before checking the bottom bracket. Next, hold on to the crank arm (not the pedal) and wobble it back and forth. If the crank arm binds or if you hear any clicking, then you need to adjust the bottom bracket.
Do the exact same thing with your hubs. The wheels should be taken off the bike then spin the hub axles and afterwards, you can do any free play or binding. If you feel binding or play, then adjustments should be made. To check the headset, start off by putting the newly adjusted wheels back on the bike.
Pull and push the handlebars back and forth once you’ve grabbed the front brake. There shouldn’t be any play. If the front end is lifted off the ground, the fork should turn smoothly. If it feels rough, then you should either replace it or readjust it.

Simple Steps In Using A Chain Tool

Once your mountain bike chain becomes damaged, you should immediately replace it with a new one. It is possible however, to repair a broken chain using a chain tool. This is the reason why traveling with a chain tool is what most mountain bikers do.
Your chain has three basic components – the metal side plates, the rollers between the side plates, and the rivets, or pins which go through the rollers and help to hold the plates together. As the chain moves around the cogs, these pins allow the rollers to freely turn.
The broken link should be replaced with a spare link. To do this, simply reattach the two ends of the broken chain and ride on a shorter chain until you can get it replaced.
Place the broken link of chain in the chain tool in order to remove it. The tool should be turned counter clockwise until the chain tool’s rivet pin touches the chain rivet. Continue to turn the tool until the pin pushes out of the roller. You have to stop turning when the pin is at the edge of the roller or else it will move through the outer side plate so you need to be careful.
When you’ve turned the tool in the other direction, you can back it out of the roller. The tool should be set to the side then gently work the chain from side to side and extract the side plates and roller.
Next thing you need to do is re-route the chain through the bike. Ask someone to hold the chain in the right spot or have a chain retaining tool when you route and repair it.
After removing the broken link and re-routing the chain, you can connect the links that were beside the broken on or insert a new link. For the link with the inner side plates to fit inside the link with the pin and outer side plates, you need to align the two ends. Until the pin is evenly positioned between the side plates, use the chain tool to push the pin.
The easiest way to learn how to do this or feel comfortable doing it is to have someone show you, then actually practice with a chain and a chain tool. When you’ve seen it done by professionals and practiced a few times, you won’t have trouble making temporary repairs on your mountain bike chain.
