The Olympic Games have taken place for over 2000 years and Jamaica has participated in the Olympic Games since 1948, when it was still an official British colony. Anyone who has been watching the Olympics since 1988 is well aware of Jamaica’s National Bobsled Team. It should then be of little surprise to hear there is a Jamaica Dogsled Team. Granted, they have not yet achieved Olympic status but do not discount the perseverance of the Jamaicans, as one day there is sure to be an Olympic National Dogsled Team representing Jamaica.

The beginnings of Jamaica’s dogsled team lie with Danny Melville, owner and operator of a Jamaican adventure tour business. While visiting snowy Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to purchase dune buggies for his business, Danny came across a dog sled with wheels in fabrication shop. After learning the hunk of metal tubing was for training sled dogs during the summer, a light bulb shone above Danny’s head and the idea of a Jamaica dogsled team was born. Of course the proprietors of the metal shop thought he was slightly crazy, but they sent him to the world expert on dog sledding, Alan Stewart in Scotland.

In 2005, after spending several months learning the secrets of dog sledding, Danny returned to Jamaica and set out in search of his own team. In a tropical climate it is relatively impossible to find traditional dogsled beasts, so Danny went to the Jamaican SPCA. He chose his team of mutts, loved them, pampered them, and trained them to pull a sled over dry land. The training took a couple of years, but the team began to show positive results. Unbeknownst to his family and friends, Danny had his eye on the world renowned Iditarod.

Danny knew he wasn’t a musher, so he hired Devon Anderson who was an expert. Anderson began racing the dogs in dryland races in 2006, and had several successful finishes. In 2007 two more expert mushers were added to the team, resulting in a first place win at the East Meets West Dryland Challenge. In 2008, it was time to hit the snow. The team completed several races, including the Kinross Classic Sled Dog Race in Michigan and the Percy De Wolfe Memorial Mail Race in the Yukon.

Finally, the team was ready to attempt the 2009 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, which spans 1000 miles of frozen land under punishing conditions. They finished 13th place, but was awarded the Challenge of the North Award for best exemplifying the spirit of the race. Next was the world famous Iditarod, a prestigious 1100 mile race in the northern most regions of Alaska. The team finished 47th out of 71, but they were the very first from the Caribbean to attempt such a feat.

How much will it all cost? That was a concern for the people of Britain when it was confirmed London would host the Olympics in 2012. Almost 4 million people intend to travel abroad during the London Olympics, according to a new survey carried out by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as part of its forecasts of the economic impact of the 2012 Games. PwC also found that nearly half of Brits don’t think the event will have positive impact on the economy.

The PwC survey got feedback from over 2,000 British consumers and 500 businesses. Nationally, 46% of consumers said they didn’t anticipate the Olympics having any economic benefit (the figure for London was 52%). Additionally, 31% of businesses questioned the notion that the Games would have a positive economic impact.

The survey also revealed that many Brits are already planning their summer holidays for 2012. There are just as many Londoners desperate to get out of the country during the Games as there are people hoping to get a seat at one of the events. More than 10% of Londoners (4 million people) intend to go on holiday whilst the Olympics are taking place, with the intention of avoiding them entirely. At the same time, 9% are hoping to reschedule their holidays so they don’t miss the Games, and 16% (3.9 million people) intend to remain in the UK so they don’t miss the event.

Overall, more than 10 million UK adults look set to adjust their holiday plans for next summer due to the timing of the 2012 Olympics. For those wishing to get out of the country, anticipated problems include overcrowded public transport and inflated prices. London hoteliers are being advised to keep their costs at a reasonable level during the Olympic Games next summer in order to avoid a repeat of disappointing turnouts for Beijing 2008 and the recent Royal Wedding in the city.

Demand for the events was expected to be overwhelming, but several hotel owners were forced to return to their initial prices in an attempt to fill their rooms at the last minute. Many of the people that descended on London in April opted to camp on the streets instead of paying the high rates and as a result hotel occupancy levels fell by almost 23% on the previous year during the week of the wedding.

Since setting up camp will not be an option next year, price hikes are being discouraged to attract as many visitors to London as possible. According to Lord Sebastian Coe, the chairman of LOCOG, the capital is expecting an estimated influx of “at least a million extra people”, but hotel rooms are likely to remain unfilled if the purported rises go ahead.

Some hoteliers & landlords are considering increasing their rates more than 4x during the Games, which threatens to create a similar outcome to that which Beijing experienced when it hosted the Olympics in 2008. To the confusion of the capital’s hoteliers, just over 1/2 of the expected 400,000 tourists arrived for the Games 3 years ago, leaving tens of thousands of empty overpriced beds across the city.

Davor Parker from LondonNights, the established online booking service for London hotels, has expressed his fears: “The problem hoteliers face is that so many ticket holders are now well aware that some hotels and certainly many landlords offering short term lets are, in some cases, planning to increase their rates four- or five-fold during the Games, so they will quite rightly be put off staying with them.

“The price hikes in April kept guests away during the Royal Wedding when they were expected to come flooding in, so some hoteliers are now starting to think about hardly increasing their prices at all to avoid another disappointing turnout.”

With the eyes of the world set to be on the UK for over two weeks in summer 2012, moderate room pricing could be helpful in supporting long-term tourism in the capital. This would consequently reinforce the importance of hotels to refrain from instigating a short-term cash-boost in order to maintain a positive image of the city as a popular tourist destination for years to come.
