Mexico’s Lucha Libre

Author: Robert Nickel
03 25th, 2011

Lucha libre is Spanish for free wrestling and is a term used in Latin countries to describe professional wrestling. Mexican lucha libre is particularly different because of the traditional use of aerial maneuvers and full cranial masks. Here we will take a look at the characteristics of Mexican lucha libre and how it compares to American professional wrestling.

During the first two decades of the 20th century professional wrestling in Mexico was not widely practiced and only really occurred regionally. However in 1933 Salvador Lutteroth took lucha libre to a national level with the founding of the Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre – or the Mexican Wrestling Enterprise. Now lucha libre was being promoted in every major city, and many small ones along the way. In the 1950’s, when television hit Mexico, lucha libre was being broadcasted across the country and thus experienced an explosion in popularity. Coincidentally, the advent of television also allowed the promotion of the very first professional wrestling star ever, El Santo. We will discuss his career later on.

Most of the rules of lucha libre are similar to American professional wrestling, specifically the count out time, the use of ropes and some of the choreographed moves. In tag team matches there is one rule that sets lucha libre apart from American wrestling. When the wrestler who is ‘in play’ wishes to switch with his partner, he most only touch the floor just outside of the ring. Since it is much easier to put your finger on the floor than anywhere else, the fast paced action that can ensue is captivating. Certainly much more so than in American wrestling where tag team members must actually touch hands to switch places.

There is a fundamental code of honor among the lucha libre. If a wager is made and lost, the most shameful thing a wrestler can do is not follow through with the ‘payment’. The stake may be money or a championship belt, however two of the most valuable stakes have nothing to do with money. The first is the opportunity for the winner of the match to shave the head of the loser, or even worse – to be permanently unmasked. The unmasking of a member of the Mexican lucha libre is tantamount to ending a career, therefore it is not something often offered in a wager.

As with American professional wrestling, there are good guys and bad guys in the Mexican lucha libre. “Rudos” are the rude ones or tough guys who break the rules and tend to prefer brawling than technical wrestling. “Tecnicos” are the technicians, good guys or faces that always play by the rules. Their moves are spectacular and always a crowd pleaser. It is not uncommon for rudos and tecnicos to be members of the same team, but not battle each other in a match. Occasionally after a team mates unmasking, a rudo may switch sides and take on a tecnicos persona.

The most famous tecnico in the Mexican lucha libre is El Santo or The Saint. He was the first nationally marketed lucha libre fighter, and thus the first to wear a mask. He wore a white mask with black eyes which were bordered with silver. His character is surrounded by much secrecy and admiration as he appeared to be a very talented athlete but no one could ever find out his identity. Not only did he fight like a hero, but he never took part in any of the more shady maneuvers that other wrestlers did. He treated his opponents with respect, and his fans with love. Throughout the 50 years of his professional wrestling career, El Santo had garnered a loyal following in the working class people of Mexico.

The Mexican Peso

Author: Robert Nickel
03 25th, 2011

The Mexican peso is the most traded currency in Latin America, for good reason as it is one of the most stable. Aside from Mexico’s recovery from the 1979 Oil Crisis, the country has had a very stable economy. Until 1867, the Mexican Real was the currency and there were eight coins and three bank notes. They were often referred to as the Spanish dollars, and became widely circulated in both North and South America, as well as parts of Asia. Even after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the Real was kept. In 1863 the currency began to change with the advent of the centavo. Finally in 1866 the peso was introduced. The Real was still circulating but gradually faded away by the 1920’s.

As a point of interest, the peso was the first currency in the world to use the $ as its symbol. The US later adopted the $ for its own use and now several other world countries also use it. While Emperor Maximilllian began minting the centavo pieces and the peso bank notes, he still kept up production of the reales. The reasons are unclear, but historians speculate there was fear that the new currency would bring down the reputation and trading of the real. However by 1905 the real was no longer being made and the peso went under a monetary reform. The gold content was reduced in pesos and the silver coins were no longer struck with regularity. A new peso was issued in 1910, 1917, 1947, 1955, 1960, 1971 and 1977. Some were silver, some bronze and some with a small amount of gold.

In 1993 Mexico was going through a tough financial period. Hyperinflation was wrecking havoc on the economy, as well as the currency. The government responded with the issuing of the nuevo peso (new peso) in which three zeros were removed from the denomination and one nuevo peso could be traded in for 1000 of the old pesos. To avoid upset and confusion, both currencies were circulated at the same time, people with the old pesos were always welcome to trade in and both sets of coins were made to look very similar. At the same time series B and C of the bank note form of the nuevo peso was also issued. All of series B were printed on the same day in 1992, and in October of 1994 series C was issued. The reasons for two series is much the same as for the coins. Series B carried over the same designs as the old peso, in order to avoid confusion until all the old ones were traded in. Series C launched the new value and the new designs.

Since 2001 Mexico has begun redesigning and issuing coin and banknotes with some of the latest anti-counterfeiting technology. Raised tactile patterns are used, both for security and for those with visual difficulties. Color shifting ink is being used, polymer plastic paper and an iridescent strip. In 2006 the Mexican government announced yet another family of banknotes would be launched. A 50 peso and a 20 peso denomination was released. In Latin American countries it seems to be tradition to occasionally release commemorative banknotes. In 2009 the Bank of Mexico unveiled a 100 peso denomination to mark the centennial of the Mexican Revolution, and in 2010 a 200 peso note was issued to mark the bicentennial.

If you are from the US, Mexican currency can seem colorful and pretty, even like play money. After all, US bank notes are the only currency in the world printed in one color. One may marvel at multi colored foreign money, even be confused by it when making a purchase. Consider the fact that currency, like the flag, represents a country. Making light of a country’s money is like making fun of the country itself so try not to do so. When you are in the privacy of your hotel room, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the coins and bank notes. Then, when out and about you will be more used to the currency and be a better tourist.

Is Catfight Just a Sexist Wrestling?

Author: Bianka Robenson
03 25th, 2011

Catfighting is really a sexist, derogatory word describing a brawl between two women. The very word invokes an image of a crazy, unmanageable battle with fingernails used as principle weaponry and the fighters are just animals.

But, like many terms of injustice, the word has been appropriated by combative females to mean another thing.

Read carefully now because lots of people still don’t “get” this:There is yet another kind of “catfighting”. It is referred to as “rules catfighting” and it has a long and appreciated place in the history of women combative activities. It is really nothing more than a wrestling match in which the females are allowed to use certain pain-oriented approaches such as hair-pulling, breast grabbing, and slapping. A rules catfight is PART of recreational wrestling.

Even though the term, in popular parlance, may imply a brawl and the guidelines inside our world could be made to imitate such an affair, rules catfights totally prohibit punching, scratching, choking or biting. In a nutshell, they’re rough although not risky and the rules are set up to prevent any injury of any kind.

It in addition has recently been going through a boom in the form of entertainment in several different forms. Cat fighting media shows forms from the newer extreme catfight aspect, in which punching and kicking are included together with the unoriginal selection of woman tactics.. Such stereotypical displays of rage are frequently demonstrated on the daytime tv talk show The Jerry Springer Show.

One of the highest profile cat fights in the media may be Miller Lite’s racy “Catfight” ads in 2002, which were pointed out by many as sexist. The careers of both performers in this commercial, Kitana Baker and Tanya Ballinger, enjoyed an essential boost. It is notable for the catfighters losing some articles of clothing after a brawl

Bianka Robenson used to be professional wrestler and later entertainment catfighter. Today she just runs a Cat fight web site and writes articles like female wrestling, because she likes to educate people on this delicate topic.

The Arm Moves In Wrestling

Author: Owen Jones
03 20th, 2011

There are loads of arm moves in wrestling, the most well-known of which are the arm drags, arm swings, arm breakers and over-the-shoulder arm drags. Another one in wrestling is the arm manoeuvre known as the arm-bar take down. The arm bar works by forcing the opponent’s arm downwards.

The challenger feels the pain about the shoulder area and the assailant will grip the arms extending them lengthwise. The shoulder is eventually dropped to the mat. This is a pin in most instances unless the wrestler can wriggle his/her way out of the hold.

The arm breakers include slamming of the arms, typically on an area of the opponent’s body where it will hurt. Usually the pin ends with the scissors, where the wrestler’s legs are crossed over the challengers body, holding his/her shoulders down to the mat.

The various moves and holds look dangerous in the ring, but the fact is that the moves are fakes, i.e. a theatrical display to get attention. The actors rehearse their scenes long before they step into the ring and are shown how to send ’signals’ to end the bout when they wish to.

The wrestling moves seem real on television, because the cameras and other distractions, including models, divert the attention of the audience. Wrestling is really quite similar to how magicians work. Magicians rehearse their stage act before they take to the stage. There is always a gimmick or an explanation, yet the magician performs his act so slickly and the audience is so distracted, that the magician makes people believe that he or she is doing the thing for real.

The ‘arm drags’ involve the assailant getting the opponent in a hook move and then flipping the challenger down onto the mats. Most of the sequences are devised by one or the other of the wrestlers and sometimes it may become a popular move and so taken up by others. Two of the older moves are the Gallatin and the Banana Split

The ‘over the shoulder’ move should be called the body slam since the opponent will throw the challenger over his shoulder, slamming him/her onto the mat. At one time, this wrestling move was probably a slammer, but today it is the shoulder-arm throw move.

The ‘wringer; is another of the arm moves in wrestling which is sometimes known as the spin wrist lock hold. This move is often followed by the Irish Thrash moves, mallet locks, and gouges.

A few other arm moves include the arm stretches, arm breakers, arm wringer, arm locks, arm bar and arm scissors. While the arm moves are very well-known in the ring, there are many moves you may see today that you would never have seen when wrestling first began in ancient days. The Amityville Horror is one of wrestling’s more modern moves. Although, I haven’t figured out what this move is all about, we shall look at it together.

Right now, from what I see the Amityville Horror is just a ploy to lead people into renting or buying the movie. As for the moves, I did see it listed in the list of wrestling moves; however, as for now no information is available to learn what this move entails. The moves are basically brands from the wrestlers, therefore what I’m assuming is that the wrestler felt he had acted out one of the most horrific moves in wrestling, so he named it the Amityville.

Why is it that some moves get loud cheers? Well, it can start when a wrestler in the ring introduces something new and it becomes his trademark, popular final move in his bouts.

The Surge In Interest Of Mixed Martial Arts

It does not take long to hear new analysts on TV talking about a politician utilizing “jiu jitsu” to carefully navigate a tough scenario. Most individuals comprehend this reference, but don’t think about where it comes from. The source of this expression is arguably much more fascinating than individuals may assume. It comes from a form of martial arts commonly known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that has discovered its way into our culture in figurative and literal terms. Its history, though, remains relatively unknown.

In turn-of-the-century Japan, Judo was 1 of many martial arts practiced by the populace. 1 such practitioner was Mitsuyo Maeda. He became a specialist within the form and eventually seized the opportunity to move to Brazil in 1914. There, he received the help of a member of the Gracie family and taught Jiu Jitsu to his sons as a sign of gratitude. From there, the history of the sport would take a drastic turn.

It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by utilizing leverage and proper technique-most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self defense.

The sons took to the sport and began teaching it to other people in Brazil. From their Rio de Janeiro base, they began to spread the sport countrywide. It was the youngest son, Helio, however, who modified numerous of the positions into what people know recognize as the modern form of the sport.

Wrestling, guard and submission techniques continued to be the main focus of the sport as the family innovated the form throughout the next quarter century. The Gracies gradually introduced much more positions and strategies. This unique version came to be called Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Now, as the form has spread to numerous locations around the world, the phrase Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is also common.

However, the sport really blew up in the US in the 1990’s. The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) began to feature martial artists from many disciplines. The Gracies were represented by Royce Gracie, who dominated the league in its early years. Seeing the effectiveness of his methods, mixed martial artists began to seek out training in growing numbers.

Over the last 15 years, Jiu Jitsu has taken its place as 1 of the most prominent fighting styles in many MMA leagues. Although any style is acceptable, Jiu Jitsu is strongly represented among the very best fighters in the world. It’s still taught at its source, but now you will find training camps the world over.

Initial time viewers might look askance at the brash fighters entering stadiums with loud music blasting all around them. However, most fighters still follow many of the protocols from the form’s traditions. The Gi, or conventional fighter uniform, is still worn by numerous competitors, even if they have to take it off before competing.

That said, many individuals discover Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to be an acquired taste. The positions are, by nature, complex and difficult to understand. This is their competitive advantage, to a certain extent. But, rather than just seeing two individuals grunting and groaning with no perceptible goal, sports lovers ought to take the time to learn about the sport. Years of evolution and influences from across the globe have brought this sport to where it is today. It is worth getting to know.

A Lot Of People Find Brazilian Jiu Jitsu To Be An Acquired Personal Taste

Last Saturday, I was out at a bar in Montreal. Just sitting back, enjoying a beer and the atmosphere in the bar at the time. When I noticed that they had the last UFC fight between Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Cro Cop on. As I watched, I began to notice how brutal these fight still are, as competitors punch and elbow each other in the head (not that Mirko Cro Cop did very much in the match). So, I began to wonder to myself, “How could people possibly like this?”

http://www.hotdvdshop.com/collection-dvd1269-episode-p-1 … hotdvdshop sells UFC Collection DVD/1-269 Episode with $95.07 for free shipping!!!!!

I am always surprised by how many people I know that actually watch UFC. Even people that normally frown on watching TV, and read books in there spare time seem to like UFC. So I ask, “Am I the only one that doesn’t like UFC?

Sure it is different than the way that it used to be. I remember back in high school, seeing matches that may friend recorded from Pay Per View, where people would have blood pouring out of their foreheads and fighters would get pounded on by their competitors if ever they got on the ground. But now, the fights seem a lot cleaner and prettied up so that you can still recognize the fighters after the match is over.

But, I still worry about the level of damage these fighters are receiving each fight. The fact that people are actually damaging the other person disturbs me. Not that everyone that watches UFC is thinking of that. Back in the 80s, I use to watching Wrestling fully believing that it was real. It didn’t bother me when Hulk Hogan went out to the ring and used violence to try to beat his opponent. Part of it probably was that everything was so clean and it was entertaining to think that the matches weren’t already decided.

The unpredictability of each match in UFC, is probably what draws people in and has allowed it to became the new wrestling since WWE wrestling has been shown to be fake. Then again, maybe we just like to watch a good fight, as for years boxers have been knocking each other out without any outrage. In any case, I don’t think I will be watching UFC again any time soon. But I would like to know what you think of UFC.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC; Zuffa, LLC, controlled by the casino-moguls Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, owns it .

Inspired by Brazilian vale tudo, the UFC began in Denver, Colorado in 1993 as a single-event tournament designed to find the world’s best fighters, regardless of their fighting style (whether boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, karate, Brazilian jiu jitsu or other disciplines). Although they did prescribe a limited number of rules, promoters marketed fighting in the UFC as no holds barred, and contests were often violent and brutal, leading critics like Senator John McCain to dub the sport “human cockfighting.” Political pressures eventually led the UFC into the underground as pay-per-view providers nixed UFC programming, nearly extinguishing its public visibility.

As political pressure mounted, the UFC reformed itself, slowly embracing stricter rules, becoming sanctioned by State Athletic Commissions, and marketing itself as a legitimate sporting event. Dropping the no holds barred label and carrying the banner of mixed martial arts, the UFC has emerged from its political isolation to regain its position in pay-per-view television.

With a cable-television deal and expansion into Canada, Europe and new markets within the United States, the UFC as of 2009 has gained in popularity, along with greater mainstream-media coverage. As of 2009 viewers can access UFC programming on Spike in the United States and Canada, on ESPN in the United Kingdom as well as in 33 other countries worldwide.
