Chicago Bears Defense Takes A Step in the Wrong Direction
The Chicago Bears 09′ season is one filled with optimism. The Denver Broncos did the Bears a favor by creating trade talk with Jay Cutler, the Bears knew if they wanted to reach and win the Super Bowl they needed more then a game manager quarterback.
Jay Cutler is the first pro Bowl quarterback for the Bears in many ages – while the bears base their team on defense and running the ball, that mentality won’t get them a Super Bowl ring only.
Jay Cutler has a bit of the “Favre” gun slinger approach – meaning he think he can make any throw at any time to his wide receivers. It will be interesting to see how well Jay Cutler protects the ball and limits his interceptions this season. Will he try to make the spectacular play or the smart play?
The loss of Brian Urlacher was devastating to the Bears defense – he is the quarterback of the defense. With his loss, the rest of the Bears defense must raise their game to a whole new level if they expect to compete for a division title.
The Bears opened up the 2009 season with a visit to Green Bay to face the Packers on Sunday Night Football. Expectations for this game were very high, and some even favored the Bears to win. Unfortunately, the team collapsed during this game, much of it stemming from the ineffectiveness of Jay Cutler, who threw a total of four interceptions during this game.
The Chicago Bears defense isn’t what it was, they might not strike fear into the opponents hearts like they once did such as in 06′. The Bears defense still can create turnovers and cause disruption for opposing QB’s – especially when the weather turns cold and windy in Soldier Filed.
Cutler redeemed himself in the team’s second game. Facing the defending Super Bowl champions, Cutler and the Bears looked like a different team out there, finding their way to a 17-14 victory over the Steelers, highlighted by a 4th quarter comeback that saw the team score 10 points.
This is a make or break year really to know if WR Devin Hester will be a great receiver (if not now then when) or just another wide receiver. Hester can break any game wide open and cause trouble for any defense.
