Choosing the Best Arrows for Your Recurve or Compound Bow

You may have chosen the right recurve or compound bow most suitable for your needs but have you thought about the arrows that you should use? Selecting the correct type of arrow is crucial if you are to be successful and must match your bow correctly and be suitable for how you will be using it. Are you going to be using your bow primarily for target practise or will you be hunting live animals? What are the different types of construction materials and which ones should you choose?

Wood Arrows

The traditional material for arrows is, of course wood, but today wood arrows are used mainly in longbow tournaments and by beginners. They are not generally used in other circumstances since they do not give consistent results due to slight differences in the weight and shape of the arrows. Arrows made from wood aren’t very durable and can warp but they are not expensive and are good for beginners to practise with.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are more consistent than wooden arrows as they are uniformly made, however, they are brittle and easily broken. They are can be fitted easily to a range of draw lengths and are often used for hunting.

Aluminium Arrows

Arrows manufactured from aluminum are much stronger than wooden or fiberglass arrows. They are manufactured to a good consistency so they are reliable in use. They can be bought in a wide range of sizes and types so you will be able to find one correct for your bow and style. These types of arrows are uniform and durable which makes them perfect for competitions and hunting and they are made with interchangeable arrowheads. They are more expensive than wood or fiberglass arrows so may not be a good idea of you are still losing a lot of arrows. Cheaper arrows would be a better choice until your skills improve!

Carbon Arrows

Carbon arrows are the choice of serious archers because they are efficient, durable and high speed. They are made with an aluminium core surrounded by a carbon composite shell and are very strong so don’t easily break as fiberglass arrows can do. They are undeniably the very best arrows made but they are high-priced so are commonly used by more serious archers.

Other Considerations

Fletches currently are typically manufactured from synthetic materials although traditional feather fletches are available. Stability is given to the arrow by the fletches as it flies and to boost speed. Have a go with different types to establish how the different types feel in use. You also need to consider the point. If you are hunting you will need a specially made point. Finally, buy a good quiver to protect your arrows and some spare draw strings.
