Cold Coast Beaches
The endless golden sand and the clean, clear, blue waters of the Gold Coast are what make it so popular. Here you can enjoy many activities such as a romantic stroll at sunset, scuba diving, fishing, and surfing. The 21 patrolled beaches are all breathtaking, but the most popular are Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach.
Main Beach was the main surfing beach in the town of Southport. Southport was the first official town in this area. It sits on the eastern side of the Nerang River Estuary and to the south of the Spit and north of Surfers. There is a beach trail for walking or biking which extends from Surfers to Main Beach as well as many restaurants and cafes for outdoor dining. The bath house pavillion on Main beach is an historic location and also offers light snacks and refreshments.
Surfers Paradise: once known as Elston, Surfers Paradise had a name change in the 1920s.Even though Surfers Paradise is a busy beach, the hum of activity doesnt take any of its amazing natural beauty away. The famous stretch of the ocean is a perfect swimming beach where you can casually join others in a game of social volleyball on the sand or if youd prefer, theres plenty of room for you to take out your favourite surfboard in the waves. There are plenty of nearby cafes and a shopping area and every Friday night the beachfront markets operate where you can pick up that special memento.
Broadbeach was named in 1934 when a new subdivision was being developed there. This long stretch of beach offers some beautiful parks which are well equipped with picnic pavilions, barbeque grills and playgrounds for the kids. Surfing is a consistent pastime on Broadbeach. The lovely walkways and pathways take you to and from the oceanfront as well as to the markets at Kurrawa Park.
Mermaid Beach was named in 1946. This is a much quieter beach that Broadbeach or Surfers. This beach is great for families because it offers covered picnic pavilions, playgrounds, bike trails and virtually no surf.
