Don’t Underestimate the Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders are an interesting team. Dominant in the earlier part of the decade thanks to players like Rich Gannon, Jerry Rice, Charlie Garner, and Tim Brown, the Raiders have struggled mightily over the past few years, attempting to rebuild, and encountering many problems along the way.
Various experiments, like the Randy Moss, Lamont Jordan, and Daunte Culpepper experiments, have been failures. While there’s been a strong pass defense in Oakland over the past few seasons, that’s been nearly it, as the team has a very hard time scoring.
Their secondary has been one of the top in the game, but that hasn’t been enough. With a horrible offense, the secondary won’t be able to do it alone.
Despite the loss, many were fairly impressed with the overall performance in the Raiders in the opening week.
The Oakland Raiders defense isn’t the worse by far. The end of last year the Raiders defense did some things, the offense of the Raiders is crippling the team. The inability to move the ball will be a problem the entire year.
RB Darren McFadden really hasn’t lived up to expectations so far – his average per carry is a pedestrian 3.6 yards.
While a win against the Chiefs is nothing to brag about, I do believe that the Chiefs are better this year than last, thanks to the addition of Matt Cassel at QB. Dwayne Bowe seems to get better by the year too. Despite this, the Raiders came up with a nice win over the Chiefs.
I don’t know the last time the Raiders were 1-1 to start the season, but there have probably been more 0-2 starts than 1-1 starts in recent years. They have to be happy with the outcomes of the first two games.
