Everything You Need to Know about a Fun Ski Trip
Skiing is not one of those easy-to-access sports which you simply stroll outside to practice–it is quite a bit more intense than just that! Skiing is what might be termed a vacation sport, one which requires you to put together a big old plan to enjoy and which tends to imply a fair distance to travel. As a result, for your family and you to be able to enjoy a nice ski vacation trip there is quite a bit of planning to be done.
First of all, you will want to make sure that you choose a good ski resort destination. In Australia, there are several different ski destinations generally to be found in the southeastern part of the country where the tallest mountains are found. Do some research on weather and snow conditions during the weeks leading up to your trip. It?s a bit of a bet, but with enough research it ought to be a safe bet.
Make sure you plan your ski vacation around the people that will be accompanying you on it. There’s no sense in bringing your kids along if all you have in mind is roaring down double black diamonds the entire time–you’ll literally kill them! In the event that you will bring children along, there will undoubtedly be time for you to get off on your own and tackle a few expert slopes, so don’t let this be such a big deal. You just may turn your kids into real fans of the sport, who will grow up to have as much passion for it as yourself!
Upon reaching your destination, if you’ve gone a while since the last time you stood on a pair of skis, or if you are in the company of people that are newcomers to the sport, then be sure to get a little training from a ski instructor in before tackling the trails. Keep the snow conditions of the trails you will be skiing in mind, given the fact that different surfaces and conditions require you to employ different ski techniques.
That’s a serious matter in its own right: what skiing techniques to use. Different snow conditions will necessitate different techniques, as there is an enormous difference between gliding along a field of ungroomed, brand new powder and hitting a long stretch of compacted, icy snow or man-made snow. You should find out from staff at the resort what the conditions are like at the moment before making your way to the lifts.
If your ski trip will last for several days, then make sure you don’t wear yourself out completely on the first day! You will not appreciate just how taxing the sport is when you finish your first day, but the following morning will deliver the message loud and clear. Be modest to start so that you don’t ruin the next few days.
Likewise, don’t hesitate to do lots of stretching and avoid activities that will give you cramps or otherwise hamper your condition, such as being liberal with the bottle or stuffing yourself with food (or failing to eat enough).
Lastly, in the event that you do have an accident while skiing, be smart and invest in a “Winter Sports Coverage” insurance package before leaving home. Though hopefully it won’t be needed, the potential cost of medical bills will be much greater than the small investment in such an insurance deal. Be smart and take this precaution.
Byron Jonas adores skiing in the Japan snow. Niseko is his favorite of the Japan ski resorts and Hooting Owl Lodge his favorite place to stay.
