General Disaster Survival Tips You Need To Know


If you are concerned about survival after a natural disaster, you first need to determine what kind of disaster is likely in your area. While it is possible that many types of natural disasters could occur near your home, there are some that are more likely than others. Therefore, you will want to find disaster survival tips for the type of disaster that is likely to strike your area.

In almost any emergency there are some tips that can be used. These are the basic steps that you need to take in order to be prepared.

You will want to provide a way for your family to have safe drinking water and food. In addition you will need to have contact with the outside world. You will need plenty of clothing and bedding. You will also need access to a basic first aid kit.

If it is likely that the outside water supply will be contaminated, you can have provision for your family by filling the bathtub with clean water before the disaster hits. In addition, you can purchase bladder bags that fit into the tub and hold one hundred gallons of water. That is enough for a family of four for five days. You will want to work hard to preserve your water. This can mean saving gray water from hand and dish washing to use for toilet flushing.

You will also need food that can be kept safe without refrigeration. Consume food in the refrigerator first. Keep doors closed as much as possible. Frozen food is safe as long as it still has ice crystals in the food. If you do not have power for an electric stove or gas for a gas stove use your camping gear or barbecue grill to cook food. Do not bring this equipment inside the house to cook as it can create a dangerous situation.

Phone lines may be down; however, remember to check with a phone that is corded if you do not have power. If you do not have a land line try your cell phone. If you cell phone needs to be charged, use your auto adapter or cell phone emergency charger.

Battery operated flashlights and radios can help you to see in the dark and hear directions from emergency personnel. You will want to have extra batteries available. Consider purchasing a rechargeable flashlight radio combination that has a hand crank charger. Many of these chargers can also be used to charge your cell phone. Do not forget the radio in your vehicle if you have no other option. If you have gasoline available start the vehicle on occasion and allow it to idle to keep the battery charged.

If you are evacuated, you will want to have at least a couple of changes of clothing for each member of the family. This will give you the opportunity to change and hand wash clothes if water is available. In addition grab sleeping bags for everyone in the family. This will allow you to be more comfortable in the emergency shelter that is provided.
