How To Choose The Right Golf Clubs for Your Game

The way we play golf has changed and a lot of that change has to do with the clubs we use. Our iron sets are different, as most iron manufacturers now offer sets that start at the 4 or even 5-irons in answer to the most iron sets now start at the 4 or even 5 irons in recognition of the rising popularity of hybrid clubs amongst most golfers. For most club golfers, hybrid clubs are more forgiving to hit than long and medium irons, so the trend is well founded.

The USGA and the R…A enforce a limit on the volume of driver heads. That limit is 460cc and for most club golfers, bigger really is better. If you struggle with consistency from the tee, a bigger driver will almost certainly help in most cases. Square designs and more uniform weight distribution makes modern drivers far more reliable, even from miss-hits. Playing a bigger driver means less loss of distance and accuracy on miss-hits.

In common with all clubs, the heart of your driver rests with the shaft. Get the shaft wrong and your consistency from the tee will suffer. Modern shaft designs can diminish or even eliminate many of the most frequent misses in golf. Troubled by a slice, flexing down in your shafts might be the remedy. Struggling to get any height – a shaft with a softer tip section could well be the solution. Fit the correct shaft for your swing speed and your driving will get stronger. If you’ve never measured your swing speed, most shaft ratings also tabulate the carry versus swing speed specifications. Check the flex rating for various shafts and match your normal carry yardage to a flex rating.

Hybrid clubs are the top developing segment in golf equipment sales. If you need consistency with your long irons, some easy-to-hit hybrids might be your best choice. Designed to be straightforward to hit from almost any kind of lie, hybrids are easy to use from the tee and the fairway. You can even chip with them. These are clubs that are designed to hit high, so shaft manufacturers now offer a range of shafts specifically made for hybrids.

Iron designs now come in an even wider range of options. Modern irons can help many of the most frequent swing faults. Offset designs to lessen or even eliminate slices, wider sole designs to minimize the fat shot and help get the ball in the air that much easier. Check the features of your irons. If their design isn’t helping your weak points, then it’s most likely time for an upgrade.

There are a lot of options to opt for in the scoring clubs also. Forgiving wedge designs mean you don’t have to make any compromises with your wedge play anymore. If the little flop wedge shot is creating problems, then a high lofted wedge could be the answer. If you have problems getting out of bunkers, a hollow sand wedge may help. These are super game improvement wedges and almost impossible to miss-hit or shank.

Rule changes have made way for some pretty strange looking putter designs. Weird looking, but forgiving. If you struggle with the flat stick, a more forgiving putter design may well be the best decision. Closing the putter too much towards the hole? You probably miss a lot of putts to the left (for a right handed golfer) and playing a face balanced putter might well be the best option for you.

Choosing the right golf clubs for your game is about playing clubs that make the most of your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. You won’t need to break the bank either. The component market offers some very high quality clubs to choose from. As an added bonus, these component clubs can be custom built to fit your game and that’s the best way to play the right clubs.
