Professional Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is a fast-paced and physical team sport that originates from Canada. Since the game is played on ice; ice hockey started as a popular sport in Northern cold-weather regions.

Due to modern progress, the sport is now enjoyed year-round on indoor artificial ice rinks. From its origins, ice hockey has become one of the four most popular professional sports in North America. The NHL (National Hockey League) is the highest level of competitive hockey in the United States. A slight majority of the league’s players are Canadian. The NHL is made up of 30 franchises. Six are Canada based. Many of the major metropolitan cities in the U.S. are home to an NHL team. Hockey season begins in late September and goes to April or May of the following year.

The average player in the NHL earns between one and two million dollars a year. Teams carry about twenty players on a roster. During the game each team will have six players on the ice. Three are called forwards. These are offensive players who score. Two players are defensemen and one is the official goaltender. This player stays in the goal and is responsible for blocking all shots made by the opponent.

Spring is a high time for the NHL. The Stanley Cup is the highest trophy to be won in the National Hockey League. The pressure is on while teams battle for the finals. Team playoff rounds are decided in game series. The winner of a series moves forward until they reach the Stanley Cup finals.
