While this project is completely doable, it is important to do research, have the right tools and materials, and be prepared when one is undertaking this project.
The first thing that one will need to decide is what purpose their pond will serve. Some people will enjoy a Koi pond. These fish make great additions in a garden pond and provide hours of entertainment. When properly cared for the fish live for several years and grow to a large size.
A goldfish or garden pond will not need to be as large as a Koi pond. However, the smaller the pond is, the fewer plants one will be able to keep healthy in it. The third type on pond involves a waterfall. Which could also be used with either the Koi or garden point. But, if one just wants the sound of a waterfall and does not want to deal with fish or plants, a very small pond will work for a waterfall pond.
Plans are available at home improvement stores and on the Internet for building a pond. Depending on whether or not a person wants to use a kit, prefabricated pond, or rubber lining, it will be important to get the plans for the kind of pond that you want to build. There are many different techniques and methods for ponds. Using plans will be a great help when building a pond.
The next important consideration will be location. The pond should not be where run-off water will run into the pond. Most people build their pond on the highest point in their garden or build a berm around the pond to keep run-off out of the pond. The chemicals in run-off water can harm the fish and plants in the pond and should be avoided.
Fish don’t mind being in the shade. If a person is building a fish pond that will not contain a lot of plants, then having the pond in the shade for much of the time will work find. However, if the pond is for a garden, the pond will need to be placed in a location that gets sunlight at least five to six hours per day.
It’s important when building a pond to keep it away from trees that drop leaves. The biggest mistake made by DIY’ers is to put their pond near, or under, a tree. When leaves drop in the pond they must be removed by hand. Putting the pond in a location where there are no trees that drop leaves will save a person a lot of time.
When digging your hole for the garden remember that the pond will be much smaller than the hole you are digging, about a quarter less. This is because after the lining and accessories are added the pond is smaller than one would expect. For a Koi pond this can be a serious difference. A Koi pond needs to be a minimum of 1000 gallons for Koi to remain healthy and grow properly and the pond needs to be at least three feet deep.
