The True Story Of The Ali/Inoki Fight
Author: Ross Everett
Decades before mixed martial arts became popular in the United States, events matching fighters of different fighting disciplines were very common in Japan. They weren’t called “mixed martial arts” at the time, but that’s essentially what they were. There’s an entire history of pro wrestlers fighting specialists from other martial arts (particularly judo) that were leaving out, but during the’70’s Antonio Inoki began to put the concept of “mixed martial arts” on the map with his matches against fighters from other disciplines.
Inoki billed himself as ‘World Martial Arts Champion’ and would frequently face other high profile fighters in contests that are generally believed to have had a pre-determined outcome similar to professional wrestling. Inoki faced a ‘who’s who’ of the martial arts world, but none were more famous than heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
There’s still much speculation about how Muhammad Ali came to fight Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki, and even more uncertainty about what happened immediately before and during the fight. Ali took the booking because he thought it was to be a big paycheck for little work. Most accounts suggest that his handlers agreed to the ‘worked’ finish without his knowledge, and once he found out that he was to ‘take a dive’ he refused.
Many conspiracy theorists have noted that these rules were never announced to the crowd on fight night, leaving many with the impression that they were being made up as they went along. Action in the fight would further validate this view, but there actually were rules that both camps agreed to heading into the fight. Not surprisingly, most of these were designed to protect Ali. In fact, they were so one-sided that if Inoki hadn’t been so concerned about preserving his big payday he would have been justified in not fighting. Inoki was prohibited from punching with a closed fist or striking Ali in the head (ostensibly since he wasn’t wearing gloves). Inoki was prohibited from using any sort of submission maneuver. The most absurd limitation was that Inoki was prohibited from “grappling or trying to take Ali to the ground”. A few observers noted that this was like not letting Ali throw a jab.
Despite the repeated howls from the media that the fight was ‘fixed’, it was anything but–it was a real fight and painfully boring. Ali did next to nothing, Inoki did whatever he could within the one sided rules. Eventually, Inoki spent most of the fight on the ground trying to throw kicks at Ali’s legs. The event ended up as a 74-74 draw. Both fighters got paid, and the fans got to watch a fight albeit a really, really bad one.
Some interesting trivia about the fight–the referee was former pro wrestler “Judo” Gene Labell, who is considered by many ‘the baddest man on the planet’ even in his 80’s. He could have very likely beaten up both men at the same time–a spectacle that might have been welcomed by the live crowd and closed circuit audience worldwide.
The fiasco didn’t hurt Inoki’s popularity in Japan whatsoever. Oddly, he became something of a hero for trying to take the fight to Ali despite the one sided rules. He would remain one of Japan’s most popular pro wrestlers and later serve in the country’s parliament. Inoki’s fights against other martial artists remained wildly popular, and are often credited as being the forerunner of PRIDE, RINGS and the major MMA organizations in Japan today.

Author: Ross Everett
One of England’s most beloved sporting figures, Sir Bobby Robson, yielded to his courageous fight with cancer recently at the age of 75. British soccer fans mourned his passing after a lifetime in the game, first as a player and then a team manager and elder statesman.
Robinson enjoyed a twenty year career as a player, split between the English Premier League clubs of Fulham and West Brom. He also earned twenty ‘caps’ in International play for England, scoring four goals.
After his retirement in’68 as an active player, he found more fame as a team manager. His guiding hand transformed Ipswich Town from a laughing stock to an EPL powerhouse and he would lead the club for well over a decade. He would also serve as the England National Team manager for 8 years, before ending his career in British football with a stint as manager of Newcastle United that ended in 2004.
Robson earned even more love and admiration from his countrymen due to his public battle with cancer. Although a brain tumor left him partially paralyzed in 2006, he never wavered in his commitment to English football or to raising money and awareness for cancer treatment. After being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2007, he dedicated the rest of his life to helping others with the same diagnosis. He started the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and raised well over one million pounds for the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre in Newcastle.
Even two men who seldom see eye to eye on anything–Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson–were in agreement on Robson’s greatness:
“I wanted to and I will keep with me always the Bobby Robson of every day, a person who had extraordinary passion for life and for football, with an extraordinary enthusiasm. Bobby Robson is one of those people who never die, not so much for what he did in his career, for one victory more or less, but for what he knew to give to those who had, like me, the good fortune to know him and walk by his side. My thoughts and embraces go to all his loved ones.”
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson shared these touching comments:
“In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above him. I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice, which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I’m sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed.”
“His character was hewn out of the coalface; developed by the County Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which he passed on to his sons. The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems.”
“The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let’s hope it won’t be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them.”
There will be another of tributes to Robson in the upcoming English Premier League season. Some teams have already announced plans to honor Robson with a black uniform arm band, while other longer lasting tributes are in the works.

Tennessee Goes To 2-0 In NFL Preseason With Win Over Tampa Bay
Author: Ross Everett
Despite the early struggles of starting QB Kerry Collins, who threw two interceptions, the Tennessee Titans managed to prevail over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday by a 27-20 score. The victory ran Tennessee’s record to 2-0 in the NFL preseason, while the Bucs dropped their first exhibition contest.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher wasn’t happy with his teams performance, particularly their offensive rhythm, despite winning the game:
“We just really didn’t get in synch like we would’ve like to.”
Tampa Bays new head coach Rahim Morris was fairly upbeat after his NFL coaching debut:
“Not a bad start though, not a bad start.
Tennessee QB Collins post game comments didn’t provide much insight into the reason for his poor outing:
“We had too many turnovers, and that can’t happen. We know we have a lot to improve on.”
Young, meanwhile, related how he had taken the advice of the Titans offensive coordinator and used his legs to keep a play alive and avoid a sack.
“And that’s basically what I did. I saw the free safety relax and he was in the Cover Two, and Kenny adjusted his route and did what he was supposed to do. I just got the ball to him.
Luke McCown started for Tampa Bay, though wasnt able to do much on offense either. He was tightlipped about his performance in postgame interviews:
“We have some things to clean up. We will look at the tapes and get better at it on Monday”
After the game head coach Morris indicated that veteran Byron Leftwich will start Tampa Bays next NFL preseason game, with McCown coming on in relief.
Tampa Bay will make the short trip to Jacksonville next Saturday to face the Jaguars, who will be playing their first NFL preseason contest of the year on Monday night. Theyll then host Floridas other NFL team, the Miami Dolphins, the following week. The Titans will head to Dallas for a game against the Cowboys next Friday night. The Titans will open the NFL regular season against the Superbowl Champion Steelers at Pittsburgh on Thursday, September 10th. Tampa Bay will begin the 2009 campaign at home, welcoming the Dallas Cowboys to Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, September 13.

Virginia Tech Earns Hard Fought Victory Over Duke
Author: Ross Everett
Duke University is far from being a national college football powerhouse, but they’re no longer a team you can take lightly either. #6 ranked Virginia Tech found that out on Saturday, and what they expected to be an easy afternoon became a tightly contested affair. Ultimately, the Hokies would survive for a 34-26 road victory. Virginia Tech improved their record to 4-1, while Duke dropped to 2-3 on the 2009 college football season.
Despite the straight up loss, Duke won where it counted as they rewarded sports players who bet on college football with the ATS victory as +17 home underdogs. Duke evened their mark at 2-2 in their lined games, while the Hokies dropped to 2-3 against the spread. The 60 combined points scored went well OVER the posted total of 48. Virginia Tech has gone OVER in 3 of 5 games this year, while Duke has gone OVER in all three of their games with posted totals.
The Hokies were saved by the career day posted by their quarterback, Tyrod Taylor. Taylor threw for 327 yards on 17 of 22 passing and two touchdown passes with no interceptions. After the game, Taylor modestly downplayed his own impact on the outcome of the game:
“I know we have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball. It’s just my job to get the ball to them.”
Venerable Tech coach Frank Beamer saw his team defeat Duke for the ninth straight time, but noted:
“I don’t think that’s the old Duke football team.
Blue Devils coach David Cuttcliffe said his team is reaching the point where moral victories don’t provide enough satisfaction:
“We got close enough in the fourth quarter to go beat a great team. Once you taste that, you like it. I wouldn’t say we spit it out — it wasn’t a choke — but we just didn’t finish.”
Despite getting the win, Hokies coach Beamer was critical of his teams performance:
“Too many penalties and too many long plays. We weren’t as sharp as we would like, but I don’t think it was lack of effort. Part of it was Duke, and part of it was us. … Sometimes I think you’ve just got to win some games that’s not real pretty on the road, and this is probably one of those.”
Still, he praised his team for doing what they needed to do to preserve the victory:
“When we needed to run the football, and we did, and got points, that was critical to this ball game. They were going to take the run away, so you’ve got to be able to throw the ball.”
Virginia Tech will host Boston College next Saturday before traveling to Atlanta the following weekend for a game against Georgia Tech. Theyll enjoy a bye week before a nationally televised Thursday night game at home against North Carolina on October 29th. Duke will play at North Carolina State next Saturday before a bye week. Theyll return to action at home on October 24th against the University of Maryland and play on the road at Virginia the following week.

Wedding Marquees Make Wedding Planning Easier
Author: Rebecca Smith
The big day should be a magical event and hiring wedding marquees can add a touch of class and elegance to the big day. Marquees are structures that can be built on a temporary basis for on-off events. As they can be erected in almost all locations, they are ideal marriage venues.
There are many beautiful outdoor locations that have special meaning for people and make the ideal place to get married. As these places are often either remote or not intended for social gatherings, the use of a marquee becomes an ideal solution. They come with all the facilities needed to make a great wedding day.
Some marquees can stretch to several thousand square feet and host several thousand guests. The usual covering for a basic structure is white PVC. However, the majority of quality hire companies will provide the option of different materials and colours. This allows the bride and groom a say in the design of the environment.
Before anything can be finalised, a specialist needs to visit both the clients and the location for the wedding. Once the area has been approved as a suitable location, work can begin on selecting specific materials, colours and features. Although these extras carry an extra cost, they personalise each wedding venue.
Design details include special designs, colours, pictures or signage. There is often the chance to choose from various dance floors and lighting equipment. It is at this point that a full and detailed schedule will be put in place and agreed on. There will also be a final price given.
To make the day go without a hitch, it is usual for the marquee to be constructed at least one day in advance. While there will usually be at least one person available throughout the event, there may be the option of hiring staff to aid in the servicing of the big day. Having everything arranged in one place can take away a lot of the stress associated with planning the big day.

Conviction involves the relationship of Betty and Kenny Waters
Author: Socorro Cohen
Conviction involves the relationship of Betty and Kenny Waters. Their troubled childhood helped the two produce a close bond together; although, Kenny develops a reputation of notoriety as a consequence of his free-spirited temper, leading him to wind up in the 6 by 8 metal cage. The film is performed inside a simple manner, letting the actors shine within the backdrop of a cold Massachusetts.
Tony Goldwyn’s direction from the actors and also the level of talent the actors display really get this to film effective. Hilary Swank, Minnie Driver, and Melissa Leo all come in with their A-game; however, Sam Rockwell as Kenny “Muddy” Waters really shines. Kenny Waters can be a lost soul by having an erratic temper. Rockwell perfectly portrays those aspects, and also adds a layer of loyalty and jovial spirit for the character, showing us that no person may be defined by one characteristic. Rockwell naturally makes all the audience need to see Kenny find hope, leading us to reinforce our reference to Betty in her own journey to free her brother. In other words, Rockwell deserves an award or two with this film, otherwise the gold.
The film shows us the importance of family, and also the power of perseverance. Standard themes, I am aware, but sometimes we often disregard the essentials and require to get reminded that they can exist.
Potential Drawbacks:
The pieces fit snug, and delay pills work well enough to become a fairly easy emotional investment, however, there is nothing completely refreshing in regards to the film. This usually happens wonderful films based on a true story, at some level; it’s evident until this true story was pushed from the Hollywood cookie-cutter.
Although the acting is fantastic, occasionally that this film feels manipulative and unnatural. The storyplot is inspiring, but if it were told inside a different manner that did not occasionally think that Oscar-bait, it may have been a better film. The film falls inside the portion of mediocrity as the inspiring story was weighed down with a somewhat schmaltzy interpretation.
NY Giants Beat Carolina On Last Second Fumble Return For TD
Author: Ross Everett
The NFL couldn’t have scripted a better ending to the first nationally televised Monday Night Football contest of the preseason. New York Giants rookie Tommie Hill returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown with 0:00 on the clock to break a deadlocked game and give his team a 24-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers in NFL preseason action at The Meadowlands.
Carolina’s fourth string QB Hunter Cantwell was in a position where he just had to take a knee and run out the clock on first and 10 from his eighteen yard line. Instead, he tried to throw a pass only to have his arm hit forcing a fumble. Hill grabbed the loose ball and headed to the endzone for the shockingly bizarre finish and a Giants victory.
Afterwards, Hill spoke about his game winning touchdown return:
“I’ve never seen a game end like that, not that way. I’m just a rookie trying to make the team. Anything like that that helps the team win in turn helps me. It was just a fortunate situation and I made the most of it.”
Hill, an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State had already become a favorite of Giants fans due to his tenacious, high impact playmaking. His touchdown”the first hes scored since high school”will only help his efforts to make the NFL roster.
Carolina coach John Fox sounded bemused at his teams unusual loss:
“Kind of an interesting ending. Both sides have a lot of work, but we have time. We have three weeks to do it
Giants QB Eli Manning, who recently became the NFLs highest paid player, put a positive spin on his short night of work:
“We ran the ball really well, hit a couple passes and we got a touchdown. That is always the goal. We did a nice job with it, so I thought we were effective as the first group.”
Carolina will travel to Miami for a game next Saturday against the Dolphins. The Giants will head to Chicago to face Jay Cutler and the Bears.

Saints Upset Colts In Superbowl Thriller
Author: Ross Everett
The New Orleans Saints used a 14 point fourth quarter to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 on Sunday to win their first Superbowl in franchise history. Drew Brees broke open a tight game midway through the final quarter with his touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey, and Tracy Porter scored on a 74 yard interception return as the Colts were driving on the next series to secure the victory. Brees was named Superbowl MVP on the basis of his 288 yard, 2 touchdown, 0 interception performance.
After enthusiasts had come in early on the favored Colts, a good deal of buyback on the Saints had pushed the line to -4′ and the New Orleans backers were enriched by their team’s outright victory. The underdog has now covered three straight Superbowls and taken the money in five of the last seven games. The 48 points scored stayed well under the posted total of 57, which was the highest over/under number in Superbowl history.
In his postgame comments, a fabulously elated Brees gave much of the credit to the city of New Orleans:
“We play for so much more than ourselves. We played for our city. We played for the entire Gulf Coast region. We played for the entire Who Dat nation that has been behind us every step of the way. It means everything. We’re here because of their strength and everything they fought through here the last few years. They’ve given us so much support, so we owe it all to our fans.”
“Just to think of the road we’ve all traveled, the adversity we’ve all faced. It’s unbelievable. I mean, are you kidding me? Four years ago, whoever thought this would be happening? Eighty-five percent of the city was under water. Most people left not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back, or if the organization would ever come back. We just all looked at one another and said, ‘We’re going to rebuild together. We are going to lean on each other.’ That’s what we’ve done the last four years and this is the culmination in all that belief.”
Peyton Manning had little to say after the game particularly about the decisive interception return:
“Made a great play. Made a great play. Corner made a heck of a play. Certainly disappointing, very disappointing. Disappointing.”
Saints’ coach Sean Payton made a bold call at the beginning of the second half when he called for an onside kick. New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Casalis suggested it was a game changing play:
“We were really excited when he made the call. That changed everything.”
Payton explained the unusual decision:
“We’re going to be aggressive. We’d seen the onside kick all week and guys executed it well. It turned out to be a big change of possession.”
The city of New Orleans will celebrate their team’s victory with a parade. With Mardi Gras celebrations already scheduled to begin shortly thereafter, it could be quite some time before New Orleans returns to business as usual. New Orleans is usually as fabulous as flamboyant skater Johnny Weir emerging out of a gold Faberge egg, but will be even more so now.

The Benefits Of Corporate Marquee Hire
Author: Dave Smith
When companies want to impress customers or win new business, corporate marquee hire may provide the answer. This is a low cost structure that is erected on a temporary basis, usually using a solid aluminium support. They are then covered with a white PVC sheet, often with windows included.
Businesses are not only desperate to retain custom, they also want to win new business. Corporate entertaining is a common tool used to do this. A marquee has the flexibility of being able to be erected in several locations at relatively short notice. They are commonplace in large public events such as air shows or horse races.
A hire company will usually send a specially trained representative to meet with a client and discuss specific requirements. It will normally also be necessary to visit the proposed site, although the larger companies may well have erected structures in several of the country’s major sporting venues. This meeting will also cover design requirements.
There are a number of additional extras that can be ordered for additional charges. Most companies can provide presentation equipment such as overhead projectors, screens and public address systems. They will also supply all the required furniture.
The largest corporate marquee hire companies will often have their own catering divisions, making organising a large event a simple process. Many of the smaller hire companies will use tried and trusted caterers, meaning the customer can trust the quality of product and service being offered. There may also be the opportunity to hire staff at the same time, ensuring a good service standard for guests.
While the process of erecting a marquee is a relatively short one, the construction team will often arrive on site a few days in advance. It is often the smaller details such as decoration, catering and heating that take time to set up. Using this kind of service takes the hassle away from the client and allows them to fully focus on their customers and guests.
