Ranking the Decade’s Top QBs

Author: Mark Hall
11 27th, 2009

The decade is almost over, and it’s time to reflect on it a bit. Being the big sports fan that I am, not to mention the fact that I’m watching football right now, I thought that it’d be nice to take a look at the top 5 quarterbacks of this past decade.

These rankings will have more to do with the decade on a whole than they will with who’s the best at the moment. Based on that, there’s ample opportunity for the ordering of this list to change once each career is done.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this, and I’d love to hear any feedback if you happen to disagree with me. Here we go.

Kurt Warner. He started out the decade as one of the best QBs in football, and incredibly he’ll finish it near the top too. He had a lull mid decade, but the Cardinals’ Super Bowl appearance last year definitely earns Warner a spot on the list.

At number four, we have Brett Favre. While he may be a better career quarterback than another man or two on this list, this is simply about what he’s done during the decade. Favre lacks the Super Bowl appearance that others do here, though that could change by season’s end.

With 5 conference championship appearances on his resume, Donovan McNabb has done his share to earn a spot on this list. The Eagles have been perennially strong during this decade, thanks to a great defense and a top notch quarterback.

Tom Brady has been at the forefront of a Patriots dynasty during this decade, and his team has arguably been the most successful franchise of the last 20 years. His numbers have been exceptional and some more of his best days may still be ahead.

Lastly, Peyton Manning is already being spoken of as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game of football, and some are beginning to believe that he may in fact be the best. He led the Colts to a Super Bowl, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him win another one.

Your Outdoor Lighting Guide

Author: Megan Watts
11 22nd, 2009

Many homes benefit from the great accent that outdoor chandeliers or another form of outdoor lighting serves as. On levels of functionality and design, the benefits of outdoor lighting are very clear. Still, anyone who’s never bought these units before may be confused at first.

With a quick look at some of the factors that you should bear in mind, I hope to make this process an easier one for you. The following things are probably the most important ones to focus on before you make a buying decision.

One of the first things that you’ll want to make sure of is the fact that any outdoor lamp you look at has a weighted base. The base of your lamp needs to be heavy enough to withstand any winds that could end up knocking an ordinary lamp onto the ground.

Equally important to the base is the makeup of the shades that your unit has. They must be resistant to any forms of weather or precipitation, or else they’ll quickly wear down after spending some time outside.

Since outdoor lighting still requires electricity in order to power up, with the exception of solar lights, any outdoor lights will need wiring that can reach an outlet. Grounded wiring is ideal here.

Not only does the wiring need to be long, but it should be coated to protect the wiring from being damaged with rain.

There needs to be sealed wiring in the unit that you buy, and the switch should be coated with rubber, or else weather runs the risk of ruining your lamp.

These are just some of the considerations that you’ll need to factor into any buying decision, but they’re likely the most important ones. The rest of it all comes down to finding one that meets the style and size parameters that you have in mind.

It’s amazingly been over 90 years since it occurred, but the legendary’19 World Series scandal most definitely lives on with baseball historians and any enthusiasts of the game. With much controversy these days about Pete Rose and his possible place in Cooperstown, another figure with parallels to Rose is Shoeless Joe Jackson, who played for the’19 White Sox (also known as the “Black Sox”) for their role in throwing the’19 World Series against the Reds.

Shoeless Joe has some very impressive stats over his- year career. He is known for playing with the White Sox, but played with a total of 3 other teams, having played with ith the Athletics, Naps, and Indians for half a season. He posted very good standard stats that should alone be hall of fame worthy.

Some of Jackson’s career numbers include 1,772 hits, 54 home runs, 785 RBI, and a career batting average of .356. Jackson lacked in the power department, but his averages were clearly impressive.

The power is low, but this came in an era with much deeper home run fences, and just before Babe Ruth made his impact as the first major power hitter in baseball, revolutionizing the game. Players hit for average, with an emphasis on extra base hits (Jackson averaged- triples per season). A closer look at Jackson’s stats show some very impressive attributes.

9.4 walks percentage, 4.2 strikeout percentage, .423 on base percentage. 517 slugging percentage, and a .940 OPS. These are great numbers and H.O.F. numbers in fact.

Aside from the numbers, his biggest roadblock is the’19 World Series incident. Jackson’s team, opposing the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, lost, and Jackson and all of his teammates were accused of intentionally throwing the World Series in what became known as the “Black Sox scandal”. Despite these accusations, Jackson batted .375 with a World Series record 12 hits. Never made any errors either. One could easily argue that Jackson didn’t throw the series.

I have researched that many say the Reds triples were hit to left field. Most of them anyway, and Joe Jackson was the left fielder. This is actually false. It is a fact that no triples were hit to left field in the World Series vs. the Reds. Now the only flaw in my thinking is that he received a $5,000 payment.

The Legend of Shoeless Joe Jackson. Let him in? It is your decision.

While there have been many great tennis players over the course of the last few decades, such as Agassi, Sampras, McEnroe, and others, I believe that women have been just as great.

I was thinking about the best women’s players in the history of the sport, and realized that so many of them happen to be very recent players. It was really hard to make this list, but I’m going to list the seven elite women’s players that come to mind, saving the best for the end.

Venus Williams has been one of the best players in modern tennis, and it’s crazy to think about the fact that she finds herself at #7 here. With 10 grand slam wins, her career has been wildly successful. Perhaps the most impressive stat is her four Wimbledon titles.

6. Justine Henin. At her peak, she was beating both of the Williams sisters. She retired early though. Lucky for us, she just announced a comeback. At just 27 years old, there’s plenty of gas left in the tank here.

5. Monica Seles. Hitting with two hands on both sides, she literally pounded the ball with every shot, and her grunts indicated this. For a while, she was untouchable, until her unfortunate stabbing. She was never the same after that. Many believe that she could have been the best woman to ever play had this not happened. Her 9 slams were all won at an extremely young age. 4. Chris Evert. She ruled the’70s and part of the’80s, and had a long, successful career.’ grand slams says it all.

It’s really hard to put Chris Evert here at four, but that’s how competitive this field is. With’ career slams, she is simply one of the best to ever play.

Serena Williams has one more grand slam win than sister Venus, and she’s a year younger. This pegs her at number three on my list, and I believe that she’ll win a handful of additional slams through the rest of her career.

You wouldn’t believe it, but Martina Navratilova continued to play doubles well into this decade. Not only did she play, but she won tournaments. That’s how great she was, and she was even better at her peak.

1. Steffi Graf. The queen of women’s tennis, she was the Roger Federer of the women’s game. 22 grand slams.

Just about everyone who works out understands the importance of working different muscle groups when it comes to strength building. A well balanced body, and one that’s evenly distributed, is the healthiest and most appealing kind.

People realize that a big chest will look weird if the back doesn’t match it, and they’ll obviously want their arms and shoulders to be proportional with each other. As a result, they’ll attempt to work out each muscle evenly over time.

Anyone who lifts weights would probably tell you that they understand the importance of evenly working out all muscle groups. While they know this, they don’t always practice it. Too many people ignore their leg muscles.

I’m going to go into a number of different reasons that the legs must be tended to. On the most basic level, those who don’t work out their legs end up looking very awkward. Their upper bodies will be larger than the lower halves of their bodies. Despite anything they think, people won’t find this attractive, even if the upper body looks great.

Aside from the drawbacks of neglecting your legs in the gym, there are many benefits to working them out too. Most notably, leg workouts fuel the production of endorphins. These are natural hormones responsible for feelings of happiness and energy.

Many people who play sports feel great when they’re done. This has to do with the fact that leg exercise will activate your body’s endorphins, giving you a natural, healthy high that many athletes are addicted to.

Speaking of running, a strong foundation due to leg workouts makes it much easier to run. Not only will your speed increase, but the distances your body can handle will notably improve.

There are clearly many benefits to lifting weights for your legs, and I hope this article serves as a motivator if you’re struggling to work them into your rotation.

Cheap Wedding Venues

Author: Stephanie McLain
11 16th, 2009

Don’t get caught up in spending thousands of dollars on a wedding venue. Brides sometimes get tricked into believing it has to be expensive to look gorgeous. This is not the case. By saving money on the location of the wedding you will have extra money to spend in other areas of your wedding, including the dress, the cake, or the honeymoon.

A Friends’ Home

Chances are you know someone with a beautiful home. If this is the case, you may already have a great place to have your wedding, you just have to ask. If you have a friend with an old historical home or a family member with a beautiful garden just ask to hold your wedding there. Your loved ones will be more than willing to help.

A Small Country Church

Don’t bother trying to book a big city church if you are on a budget. Many times these churches can be as expensive as the ritzy wedding halls. Instead search out a small, but well maintained church or chapel. These churches are only a fraction of the price, but just as beautiful.

Local Museums

Did you know that many museums have certain areas that are available for weddings? These areas are marked off and rented by the hour. Since many couples do not know this is an option, the museum rates are usually quite a bit cheaper than a well known wedding venue.

The Forest

A small clearing in the forest is the perfect place for a ceremony for the adventurous couple. Tell everyone to bring their hiking boots and make an event out of it. Since the forest has beautiful scenery already you won’t have to spend too much on decorations.

On Top Of a Mountain

A wedding on top of a mountain will not soon be forgotten. Couples love this location because it is surprisingly affordable and makes a beautiful statement of their love for one another.

The’80s were a great decade for tennis. A long decade that saw the face of the sport change.

I’d like to take a trip down memory lane by writing about my favorite five’80s tennis players. These all come down to my personal preferences and they’re not based on merit. Nonetheless, I’ll be curious to see how these compare with yours.

The early’80s were dominated by Bjorn Borg before his early retirement. At the top of his game, he was undoubtedly the best in the world and one of the best to ever play the sport.

Stefan Edberg. One of the last true serve and volley players who captured the world’s number one rank. I can’t think of a player who covered the net as well as Edberg has, and he was one of the last of a breed of true serve and volley tennis players that essentially no longer exists.

How about Boris Becker? When he took the tennis world by storm after winning Wimbledon at the young age of 16, tennis fans knew that a legend was born. Becker followed through with some great tennis for another decade, and cemented himself as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

While he wasn’t exactly a fan favorite, I absolutely love what Ivan Lendl did for the sport. He sat atop the rankings for longer than anyone before him in modern tennis had, and he won more tournaments than one could possibly dream of winning today.

1. John McEnroe. What can you say about Mac? His charisma, his hustle, and everything else that he did on the court is legendary. To see him as a commentator through his retirement is simply a delight. I was shocked to see how well he plays when I saw him play at a senior tour event.

It was hard to narrow this list down to just five, as there are many others I could have mentioned. How do these players compare to yours?

Are you new to working out, or simply looking for a new routine? If you answered yes to either one of these questions, I’ll be the first to tell you that there are literally thousands of different workout routines out there, many of which do a great job at getting you into great shape.

While my tips will definitely set you off in the right direction, this in and of itself won’t be enough to make a difference. The real results will come from your consistent dedication when it comes to working these muscles.

However, following a steady workout plan can go a very long way toward building your body proportionally in a way that brings great results. Let’s look at the muscle groups that you’ll need to work out.

Anyone serious about putting on muscle mass will need to regularly work out their chest muscles. Whether you’re benching some barbells or doing more focused exercises like inclined press, dips, or one of many others, any and every one of these will make a big difference.

Many people enjoy building their chest muscles, and they already see the value in doing so. The back muscles are neglected more often though, and they shouldn’t be. These are just as important as the chest muscles.

Don’t forget about working out your shoulders either. While some back and chest exercises may incorporate your shoulder muscles, you’ll want to have a workout that’s dedicated to your shoulders.

Did you know that there are two major muscle groups in your upper arms? There are the biceps on the front of your arm, and the triceps in the back. Don’t forget about either one of these.

Whether it be for appearance purposes, extra energy, or overall strength building, there are many reasons you’ll want to work out your legs. Do some exercises like squats, dead lifts, calf raises, and more to achieve this.

Other possibilities are abdominal workouts, lower back muscle building techniques, forearm training, and more. Mix these muscle groups in with some running and you’ll be well on your way to some great results.

I’ve been lifting weights since high school, and that’s been well over a decade now. I love the clarity of mind that a good gym session gives me, and feeling stronger definitely contributes to my overall energy levels and well being. It never hurts to be a little stronger too, as I’m sure that’s done some good things for my confidence levels, even if I don’t realize it.

I like to be as steady as I can with my workouts. It keeps things easy and routine, and I end up not neglecting any part of my body this way. Still, I’ve never really known whether to go with one or two muscles per workout.

For a long time, I would work out two muscles at once, and then I decided to mix things up by focusing on one muscle per day.

My two muscle workouts consisted of a number of different combinations where I’d blend two muscle groups together per workout. This allowed me to do a full cycle every three days.

There are some good things about doing things this way. Very often, I’d end up working important muscles like my chest and legs twice in a week, which was great for muscle growth.

On the other hand, it was taking me at least 90 minutes per workout and sometimes I didn’t have time for this. Others also believe that hitting each muscle twice in a week is overdoing it.

For the last two years, I’ve been doing one muscle per day. My workouts are a lot shorter and I take some of the saved time to run on a treadmill.

You’re probably wondering if this makes a difference if you’ve never tried it. If you’re able to get to the gym about five days per week, I’d definitely suggest doing it. Your muscles will be fine. If you’re only going two or three times, though, you’re probably best off sticking to two muscles per workout.

Fly Killers Work

Author: Alan Fischer
11 11th, 2009

If you are looking for a fly killer, chances are you are like me and have had them bother you. Not only flies, but wasps and mosquitoes that can hurt your skin. Some of the other bugs might carry harmful bacteria.

After putting up with years of fly problems, I finally researched fly killers so I could get rid of the problem. Fortunately, what I found is it wouldn?t put a dent in my wallet.

Fortunately, it looks like there are plenty of options out there to take of the bug problem.

There are two distinct groups of people who need help when buying a fly killer. Let?s take a look at those.

The first type of person is one who needs to have a fly killer at their home or business. It could be because they don?t want to hear the noise anymore, they don?t want to swat them away or they are landing on you food or drink. You are wanting to get rid of them for peace of mind.

Many business owners are also forced to install fly killers because of the law. This is especially relevant to restaurant owners because consumers do not want flies on their food.

The good news is there are plenty of fly killers out there to fit your needs. The most conventional setup is an ultraviolet lamp to blur the fly in, and then a sticky board to eventually kill them.

Many people quickly want to know how much this will cost them. Basic fly killers can be bought for less than $50, while they can rise in cost all the way to several hundred dollars. This all depends on the size and technology you want.

Finding a good price can sometimes be tricky, but I found my best success online. They always seem to have a better deal than a hardware store.

Good luck on your search. I hope you get rid of the flies soon enough!
