The Different Kinds of Airsoft Pellets

If you have an airsoft gun, you will find that it is pretty useless unless you have some kind of ammo for it. The most common type of ammuntion for airsoft guns are six millimeter BBs. These are the primary types of BBs that are sold both in retail stores and online.

Even though 6mm is the main size, another size that you may come across is an 8mm BB. However, not many guns are compatible with this latter type, which is why you should stick to only looking for the 6mm variety.

Since size is largely negligible, due to the widespread use of 6mm BBs, the primary distinguishing characteristic is that of weight. Most BBs either weigh .12g or .20g, although there are other weights as well.

BBs that weigh less cost less, because they are less dense and therefore are made with weaker or less material. Although they are cheaper, they are truly inferior to .20g BBs, because they cannot go as far or travel as accurately.

Not all airsoft guns can handle .20g BBs. Especially cheap airsoft guns can only work with .12g ammunition, so even if you wanted to use the better kind, you would not be able to. If you do desire to use .20g BBs, you will have to get a strong airsoft rifle or pistol.

Although .12g and .20g are the most common weights, there are many additional weights that exist, including .25g, .44g, and even .80g. Practically, you would not want to go above .44g, and even that is only used for the most powerful of sniper rifles.

There are also special types of BBs out there, and these unique characteristics are independent of weight. For example, biogredable and tracer BBs are becoming more frequently used. Biodegradable ammunition is preferred because it is better for the environment, and tracers are used to be able to see where you are firing in the dark.

As a general tip, no matter what kind of BBs you are interested in, you should buy a lot of them at once. This saves you money on ammunition, as well as time you would need to spend purchasing more BBs.
